Everybody had their theory as to why a rising ninth grader was participating in a
camp reserved predominantly for seniors. Maybe Sebastian Telfair's cousin,
Adidas peddler and all-world point guard Stephon Marbury suckered ABCD into
taking the kid. Perhaps Sonny Vaccaro wished to carve a local niche by accepting
the Brooklyn boy. Or could it have possibly been pure novelty?
Telfair debunked them all. Whipping a behind-the-back pass to Major Wingate for a
lay-up in the Underclassmen All-Star Game, Telfair left coaches and fans wide-eyed
and salivating over his delicious moves.
This was no hoax. The kid, who will still be a high schooler by the time the Athens Olympics roll around
in the summer of 2004, can play. A diminutive 135 pounds, Telfair has plenty of room to grow, but the
comparisons to cousin Steph are already running rampant.
Asked if he had begun looking at schools, Telfair innocently replied, "yeah, Lincoln High School."
