Interview with Eddie Robinson
Chris MacAulay, The Sabre, August 24th, 1999
Eddie Robinson, a 6-4, 235-pound defensive end and tight end from Venice High School in Los Angeles, California, committed to Virginia in May.
What are your expectations for the upcoming season for you and for Venice H.S.?
I'm team first, I want to win a 4A title, get back to where we were last year.
Individually, I want to have 1,000 yards receiving, 10 touchdowns - a big year for me.
How did your team do last year, and what position did you play?
DE, now I'm playing TE, we went 11-1, lost to Taft in the playoffs.
How did you get familiar with UVa and Coach Wilmer?
UVa is my favorite team; they play in my favorite conference, the ACC. I always watch the ACC when it is on TV, and I always watch UVa. Also, my teammate, Sharif, he's up at UVa now, and he is one main way I know about the school. He was a major part of my decision.
Have you talked to Sharif?
I haven't talked to Sharif since he got to UVa.
What are UVa's expectations of you according to Coach Wilmer?
UVa expectation is that I come in, work hard, try to help, but I haven't talked to Coach Welsh yet.
What are the characteristics you would use to describe yourself as a player?
Size and speed are the two words I would use to describe myself.
Have you had any problems with the transition to TE?
No, I have been working at it all summer, running routes and catching balls, and so far it has gone really smoothly.
Have you been playing in the 7v.7 league?
Yes, the whole team, all of the skill guys have. It has been tough, since we have a new quarterback who's a junior. We lost a lot from last year, so the transition has been a little bit rough, but we are getting better.
How do you feel about the competition at UVa, do you have expectations at your position?
I love to compete, and I'm looking forward to getting there and working hard, so that I can contribute. Coach Wilmer and UVa have recruited me as a TE, so that is where I expect to compete for playing time.
What other schools have recruited you?
Arizona State, they offered me. UCLA, Oregon, Northwestern, USC, Colorado have all been in touch, but they didn't offer me yet.
Did you go to any summer camps?
No, I just played in the 7v.7 this summer.
What are your other interests, have you decided what you might study?
My uncle is an accountant, and I see how hard he works, but also you can see how rewarding it is. He has told me that its tough, but that you really get a sense of accomplishment. Really, I'm not sure, but I am going to look in to physical therapy, I understand the program at UVa is very good. As for hobbies, I really enjoy playing basketball.
If you were the coach, and had to put Eddie Robinson in the position that helped the team the most, what would that be?
Tight End.
You prefer that to defense?
Yes, very much.
Will you be officially visiting other schools, or just Virginia?
Coach Wilmer has told me that he's trying to set up my visit for early December, so once I get that set, I may still visit Arizona State, but I am still trying to square things away with them.
Are you completely firm in your commitment to Virginia?
Yes, definitely.
Have you qualified academically?
Yes, I received an 890 on the SAT, and I plan on taking the test again, based on Coach Wilmer's advice, and I hope to improve it even more.
Your grades are good?
Yes, my grades are solid.
