Here are some notes on the guys coming in other than James Pannell,
who has been talked about quite a bit already. I like this class and I think it’s well matched with what I see as team needs – short term and longer term. On the defensive end, the coaches are bringing in bigger, very athletic defensemen, an excellent goal tender. They’ve deepened the midfield roster, and added some lefty firepower, and added some SSDMs that are fast, physical players with good size. Plus Pannell, a top righty A/M, and I think it’s a very good class. There are some guys who may contribute right away, and some with excellent upside. In my opinion, the biggest gap in the class is at FO - where it looks like there is an immediate need, but it doesn’t look like any of these guys are likely to be the answer. Defense & Goal: Tanner Scales (6-2, 200) - Close d, like a Mike Kelly kind of player – thick and strong, low center of gravity, hard to get past, rarely gets beaten one-on-one. Named defender of the year in one of the better HS leagues (NE-West) last year as a Jr. Physical, but smart about it. Also a very good hockey player. Mike Howard (6-5, 220) - D/LSM. Standout athleticism – even among the top D-1 lax defensive recruits he’s played with on GotSkillz for the last two years; was also recruited to play soccer at top D-1 programs. May not get a lot of playing time first year; is seen as a player with tremendous upside to develop in the program. Selected as one of the top defenders in VA Prep league in 2011 and 2012. Dickson Smith (6-3, 200) - LSM. Size and speed stands out. Picked up ~ 80 – 90/year as a sophomore and junior in HS, though he plays in a smaller league in NE. Also varsity hockey and soccer player. May be a wild card at LSM & FO wing this year. Dan Marino (5-11, 200) - One of the best goalies in this class according to IL. Had a break out year at Garden City in 2011, playing behind an experienced defensive crew (three starters graduated to very good D-1 programs). From all reports, Marino is having an excellent year again this year, behind a younger, but very good, GC defense. Midfield/Attack: McNamara (6-0, 175) - Versatile – plays both short stick and LSM and will switch from one to the other mid-game. On the first-line midfield at Haverford this year; second-line last year. One person I’ve talked to, who knows UVA lacrosse very well, and who has seen McNamara play quite a bit says think Billy Gladding – a very complete midfielder who does all the little things well, whose impact day-in day-out is much bigger than you see on the stat sheet. Matt Florence (5-11, 175) – Lefty M/A, very fast, reportedly good at face-offs too (not a FOGO though). I’ve been told he may be the most polished of the kids from the West Coast this year – hard shot and pretty good with both hands. Solid on defense too. Excellent athlete – varsity football and basketball – RB with 1,600+ yards as a junior; converted to starting QB as a senior; helped his team go deep in the States both years. Carlson Milikin (6-1, 185) - Very fast – 40 time in the 4.4 to 4.5 range. Also a very good football player. Based on an article in the Cville Daily Progress, coaches are very high on his defensive ability. May compete for time at SSDM this year. James Dahlheimer (6-0,190) – Physical player; strong on GBs, fast too. 1st Team All State midfielder in Ohio in 2012. Also plays football player (CB/TB). My guess is that coaches may try him as an SSDM first. Zach Wood (6-3, 200) - Big powerful lefty A/M. Illinois State leader in total goals and points three of his four years. Had 81 g, 48a, and 96 gb this year, and 315 g 144 a for 459 HS career total points. He’s a dominant player at his current level; a HS coach from Illinois whose team plays him says you have to game plan for him. Hopefully he makes the transitions to D-1 smoothly. Here’s Dom’s comment on him from the recent Jeff White article: "He's a big, left-handed kid that can shoot," Starsia said. "If we had that player this year, that might have been enough." |

I can't say that. Look at the other ACC teams and JHU and compare them to us. -- 1moreUVAfan Fri Jun 8 2012 8:40:06 PM |

In fairness, lockerroom leaders like Bray are few and far between. -- Horsemouth Sat Jun 9 2012 4:26:59 PM |
