They row so many times the coach has a pretty good idea who the best
ones are. Boats are determined roughly by erg times (the rowing
machine) and then mixing up boats at the beginning of the season, seat
races (having 2 equal boats race, switching out a person from each boat,
racing again and seeing the result), etc to figure out the best
combination of girls. It's not really an exact science and there have been
teams torn apart from dissent over choices, luckily it doesn't seem to be
much of an issue for us.

As for order of the boat roughly the idea is to put the heaviest, strongest
people in the middle. Because as you row the boat is literally lifted out of
the water a little at the bow you put the lightest girls there. Then the
stern pair (including the stroke seat) is whoever the coach finds that can
control the boat and can follow the race plan the best.

I have no detailed knowledge of the team FYI, this is just basic rowing
info

Meant "erg scores" not "erg power" although the latter sounds cool. **  --  NickS   Wed Jun 6 2012 11:03:04 AM
