Thus, no church is under an obligation to recognize a civil union and, conceivably, might excommunicate on account of disfavored union. It was even that way for Henry the Eighth, who had to conjure up his own church to accommodate his marriage to Anne Boleyn. I suppose Pope Clement wasn't much of one for clemency. |
