The amount of vitriol still being thrown at Bradley is kind of stunning. Is it
disappointing to lose a game in that fashion? Of course it is. But as Goff puts it, it's more like a mid-major hoops team being up 12 at halftime of a NCAA tounament game against a BCS school. Everyone's excited, the potential for the big upset is there, but everyone knows the BCS team is going to claw back and make it interesting in the second half. As far as Bradley's perceived limitations of not playing our most "talented" players, I think it's important to remember that the only reason we beat Spain and took it to Brazil in the first half was discipline from the players, tight marking, team defense, and timely counterattacking. To somehow think that if we took a more freewheeling strategy we'd be more competitive, or not have to fall back and hope for a counter when up 2-1 against the best teams in the world, is in my opinion foolish. Just like everyone else, I would love to see Adu and Torres play. But since we don't get to watch training, and Bradley does, maybe he's in a better position to decide whether or not players are dedicated to their defensive responsibilities, they interchange well with their teammates, and they can fit into the system on that particular day. And make no mistake, it is only by playing to our very particular strengths that we can stay competitive in these sorts of games. We simply DON'T HAVE THE TALENT to possess the ball against these teams. Sorry, not even the golden calves Adu and Torres. Nor do we have the game changing subs that can swing a game in the late stages. Brazil brings Dani Alves and Elano off the bench. We have Bornstein, Casey, Kljestan, Torres, Adu. It's not even close. Would I like to see Adu and Torres get more time? Sure. We'll see that in the Gold Cup for Adu, at least, and I'm sure Torres will get his chances as we move forward with friendlies and WCQ. They'll be important players for us as we move forward. Do Bradley's subs often confuse me? Yes. But I'm not pinning the loss on Bradley's substitutions. We had a backline that was playing its second ever game together going up against the two best offensive teams in soccer. They gave up three goals. #*!& happens. We aren't a top team and to expect us to win these games regularly is foolish, even though the way this loss came obviously hurts a ton. In my opinion, given what he has to work with, Bradley's team has shown incredibly over the past week. Maybe you think that's in spite of the coach, but I happen to think he's put them in a position to succeed against vastly superior teams. $.02 |
