That's a coaching decision. We specifically went faaaaar away from the
style of play that took it to Brazil in the first half. The line "the best defense is a good offense" is applicable here. When we had our offense clicking and were actually doing things other than "kick it long and see if we can run it down," Brazil did not have as much offense on their own and our defense was helped by that. However, Bradley panicked with the early goal in the second half and the style of play changed. He failed to make timely OR proper substitutions. He bunkered way more than we should have. If you care to watch the game again, count how many balls in the defensive third we just pounded as hard as we could down the field and gave possession back to Brazil. Yeah, you have to play a bit more defensively with a lead in the second half. But there's a difference between not throwing any more long bombs, for example, and taking a knee three times. Bradley essentially took a knee offensively and asked his defense to absorb continued offensive pounding. That will NEVER work against a team like Brazil. |
