Time is not displayed because it's kept by the ref on the field, who adds
time as he sees fit to account for injuries, substitutions, delaying tactics,
etc. He adds time as events warrant, which would require frequent changes
to the clock if you're going to update it in real time. Personally, I would find
that slightly annoying, but not enough so to give me any real objection to
efforts to change the timekeeping system.

MLS tried using a countdown clock when the league first started, but
apparently received a lot of complaints about it. They soon abandoned it in
favor of the standard clock used in most other countries.
