Soccer in a Football World by David Wangerin (who just passed away
recently) covers the history of soccer in the US from the early 1900s
through the mid-2000s, including a look at some of the rule changes made
by various professional leagues here to increase interest.

In fact, I'd recommend this book to anyone who's interested in the
development of soccer in the US. It's a good read and is very well
researched.
