I'm expecting traditonalists to dislilke ... for tradition's sake ...

***************************************************************************
In order for soccer to approach major sports status in USA, these rule
changes are needed for FAR --- Futbol, American Rules :

1. Eliminate the "offsides" rule. A purely foolish rule for which the only
justification is that "it's always been that way" and that "ice hockey
does it too". Would basketball be a better sport with "offsides" ... are
fast breaks really that boring?
2. Make the goal bigger ... may need to iterate until determining the
optimal size ... BUT, it simply needs to be big enough for the average
score to be 7-6 instead of 1.3 to 0.4. I'm thinking something like 3-4 feet
wider and 1-2 feet taller ... yes, tall goalies will increase in value.
3. Nothing is worse than a team with a 1-0 lead packing all 11 players
back in on defense and trying to kill 80+ minutes in a defensive shell...
some overmatched teams may even employ this strategy in hopes of a
0-0 draw. SO, any team that is tied must leave 1 player on the offensive
side of the field ... if you lead, you must leave 2 players on the offensive
side of the field. This will open the game up and provide for 10 off. v. 10
def. and 10 off. v. 9 def. instead of the normal 10 off. v. 11 def, which is
too often boring.
4. Similar to the 3 point field goal in basketball, a bonus should be
awarded for long goals (to encourage occasional longer rocket shots) ...
perhaps this would be scored as 1.5 points, versus making regular
goals worth 2 and long shots 3 ... soccer is big on tradition after all (tic).
5. Change the penalty area from the rectangle shape to round off the
corners closest to midfield ... no reason to enclose include those lower-
strategic areas. At the same time, adjust the size of this area to the
proper distance from which a well-struck 1.5 point goal could be
reasonably attempted.
6. Instant replay use where warranted ... such as for determining when
a "flop" has occurred (though this can also be decided without the use
of replay video), the player shall receive a two minute penalty and
subsequent violations by the team also result in penalty shots for the
opponent.
.
Projected results:
+ Increased attendance at games.
+ More action, possession of the ball becomes much more valuable -
and valued... as there is a legitimate chance to score provided now on
each possession.
+Increased TV ratings
+All the same skills will be required as for regular "soccer" so you can
go back to the boring "old-style" for International play/ World Cup ... or
else, start World Cup FAR.

An exhibition using these rules with good pro/college/high school teams
would quickly show this to be a superior game.
