question marks/potential holes defensively. We were able to click
offensively at a high level over numerous games, but had a bit of an "off" game offensively, which exposed some of our D shortcomings. That said, even yesterday's game could have had a different outcome, and Duke and UVA both have exceptionally talented teams. Duke matches us in the talent department, and they had a great day yesterday. But, we make plays we are capable of making defensively on their two goals (both of which came off slight miscues rather than Duke brilliance), and add some of the brilliance we have displayed lately (as opposed to some pedestrian shotmaking in a few clutch opportunities yesterday), and you have a different result. Even with us playing definitely off to start the game -- made more glaring with Brian not starting. So, what you have is two evenly matched squads that essentially split a pair of one goal differential games (not counting the last minute goal scored when we were pulled up in desperation mode). Both teams capable of winning a national title. Too bad it came in the round 16, but that is what a good 2/3 seed matchup should bring. On the guys side, you definitely saw a team running into a better, rested, more experienced team. Look forward to seeing us mature next year, and with another great recruiting class ready to come in. GG needs to hire a strong assistant with a creative offensive streak to help mold this unit. I thought the guys got results down the stretch that matched their capability. They were a tough out for anyone, but not quite ready for a big postseason push. |
