Sanam Singh defeated Kaden Hensel (#512) of Australia 6-2, 1-6, 7-5
to advance to the main draw of the Virginia National Bank Men's Pro Tournament today. In the deciding set, each player was tiring and not getting a lot of first serves in play, but Singh got closer and closer to breaking Hensel and the pressure finally paid off in Game 12 when Singh broke through at Love to secure the victory. In the first set, with the score 2-2 and Hensel serving, Singh dominated the rest of the set with four straight games including two breaks at Love and 15. Although the famous Singh two-handed backhand was not as sharp today (several hit low into the net), Sanam used a slice backhand and lobs to keep Hensel back and then hit forehand winners. At the start of the second set, Hensel appeared to get himself motivated and he began to get a high percentage of first serves in play. He came to the net more and had good placements on a lot of deep shots at Singh's feet. He moved Singh around a lot and broke Singh's serve in Games 2 and 5. Sanam was not getting first serves in, missing his spots and not getting returns deep enough and lost the set 1-6. But in the third set, Singh served well to start the set and began to put some pressure on Hensel's serve. Meanwhile Hensel's first serve percentage was going down and he stayed on the base line more, making a few more unforced errors than he had in the second set. Singh got Games 2 and 4 to duece, but Hensel held those serves. In game 8 with Singh leading 4-3, Hensel went through a long serve game with 6 deuces which tired him out mentally and physically. Singh had three break chances in that game, but Hensel eventually won it to even the score at 4-4. Meanwhile as the tension mounted, Singh was getting more first serves in play and held his serves to lead 6-5 before the important break of Hensel's serve in Game 12 to win the match and advance. In the last 3 games of the third set, both players argued calls. In Game 9, Singh had two base line judge calls against him, at least one was in and he still held serve. In Game 11, the base line judge ruled a third shot out and the umpire overturned it and called it good (which it was). Hensel was visibly disturbed by this overcall. Later in the same game, the base line judge called another Singh shot out and then corrected himself during Hensel's shot causing the players to replay the point. In the crucial 12th game, Hensel did not get a single first serve in play and double faulted once, perhaps feeling the pressure of the home crowd cheering for Singh. In the other morning match, Todd Paul beat Jonathan Eysseric in three sets, including a third set TB, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4). I am going to try to get back today for the back end of Huey's first round singles match against Filip Prpic of Sweden and Inglot's first round singles match against Iija Bozoljac of Serbia. Somdev had an hour's hitting session on Court 12 during Singh's match and Inglot was watching with BB and TB in one corner as Singh got his win in the third set. |
