Raising his tennis to an even higher level of brilliance, Sanam Singh
upset the #156 pro player in the world, Grega Zemlja, in three thrilling
sets, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 today at BHSC before 250 cheering local fans.

Singh got off to a fabulous start in the first set by breaking Zemlja in
Games 3 and 5 to go up by two breaks while holding his own serves. In
winning the set 6-2, Singh made it look almost easy with a great
assortment of backhand cross court winners, forehands down the line
and eight (8) aces which is not normally in Singh's considerable
arsenal. Zemlja made several unforced errors when Singh would move
him around with well placed shots on both sides, which seemed to be
Singh's strategy for the entire match .

In the second set, Singh started missing getting some first serves in,
but still had five more aces to help him win games. In Game 6 with the
score 3-2 in favor of Zemlja, Singh was serving and down Love-30, but
came back with sparkling play to hold serve and tie the set up at 3
games each. Then in Game 7, Singh broke Zemlja and held his own
serve. With the score 5-4 in favor of Singh, Sanam had the match on
his racket in Game 10, but Zemlja fought off two match points. The
second one was a great first serve by Singh to be met by an even
greater return by Zemlja, which probably surprised Singh, who then
played a half volley that Zemlja put away for deuce. Singh seemed
dejected then and was broken by Zemlja in that game and also the next
serve to take the set at 5-7 when Singh was so close to winning it all
earlier.

In the third set, Zemlja seemed to have new life now and he played with
energy and a sense of urgency. He got an early lead at 2-0 when he
broke Singh's first serve for his third straight break of service. At that
point, Singh could have taken his parting gifts then and had a great
experinece playing against the pros. I used to think that Somdev
Devvarman defined the heart of a champion. I now think that Sanam
Singh is made of the same mold. What he did to rebound from
adversity was truly inspiring. Singh immediately broke Zemlja back in
Game 3 to get back on serve and followed it up with a second break in
Game 5 to give the edge he needed.

It was a tense Game 10 again in the third set and looked to be a repeat
of Game 10 in the second set. Singh was down Love-30 on his serve,
but rallied with tremendous shots to hold his serve and win the set and
match. The crowd roared its approval along with all of Singh's current
teammates plus Dom Inglot, who were watching from the sides of the
court. Singh responded by "clapping" his racket in appreciation for the
great support the crowd gave him.

I helped by changing my viewing position after the third straight break of
service at the start of the third set, and watched the rest of the match
from the doubles match in progress on court 7 and walking around to
calm my own nerves. Singh will face Scoville Jenkins in Round 2 who
beat Cory Parr today. The unsaid thought is what happens if he
continues to advance in conflict with the NCAA individual championship
in New Haven, CT this weekend starting on Thursday, I think. Mr. Singh
might be doing some flying back and forth maybe.

Off to see the main attraction in the return of Somdev to Charlottesville.
