I continue to be amazed at the fantastic job BB continues to do. I looked at the
roster yesterday, and he has 13 serious, talented players on his team, and only 6 or 7 of them are going to get serious playing time, and he has only 4 and a fraction scholarships to offer. He's clearly a hypnotist. But his recruiting is not the best of it. The development of the players seems to me to be extraordinary. I remember the rumors about the tall Englishman who was on the campus but not on the team. It was mysterious and exciting, but when Dom first started playing, I would have said this is a good addition to the team but he isn't well-rounded and consistent enough to make a valuable contribution at the highest levels. Wrong again. I could repeat this story with every player, but it would be to embarrassing. I think his record (and Tony's) in developing players must be one of the reasons he can have such a large roster. I suspect there are a number of tennis parents who say I can send my son to develop his game at the same time as he gets a great education or I can send him to A tennis academy to play tennis full- time. And if he goes to Virginia I know he will be working with and under the influence and guidance coaches of great integrity who will be devoted to his best interests and hanging with young men who are achievers in every part of their lives. IN BB's first year at Charlottesville, they split the squad during the early part of the season for some individual tornaments. BB came to Knoxville with a couple of his players (I can't remember which). I went over to sit in the stands and watch a little. I had a Virginia cap on, and BB came up and introduced himself and talked about his plans. He's such a good guy that I felt lucky that I chanced to meet him. But I was too long a Virginia fan to believe his stories about the new tennis facility that was going to be built and especially the one about how Virginia was going to be at the highest levels of college tennis. Wrong again. |
