especially in the 3rd and 4th sets. The contrast between the 1st and
2nd sets when Janowicz was missing on some of his bombs and in the 3rd and 4th when he was not missing was amazing. This guy only played four ATP main tour events last year, but got to the PNB Masters final in Paris. He will be moving up in the rankings and he was already seeded 24 for this tourney. When he was "on" he looked like a top 10/15 guy to me. His challenge his going to more frequently "on" than "off", but I think he can do it. SD played incredibly consistent and ran down a lot of balls, but his 2nd serve is till a huge problem and his lack of a power or having putaway shot has not changed. I do not know the exact number of extra points SD would have gotten had he won a 2nd round at a major, but it would be lot and with his protected ranking slots dwindling, he really needs points as he is currently #551 in the world. The problem with his protected ranking is that it is not high enough to get into the main draws of many ATP "non major" events with their rather small draws, so he has limited opportunities to get into main tour events. It looked to me that he played as well as he was in 2011, so his shoulder must finally be sound. I sure hope he gets back into the top 100, but I just do not see him becoming a top 50 guy with his lack of power and weak serve. |
