The following is a summary of how UVa has fared in its final match (i.e.,
the match that it ultimately lost) at the NCAA championships each year since 2004: Year Score Opponent Dubs Winner Round 2004 4-3 Ohio St UVa 16 2005 4-1 UCLA UCLA Qtrs 2006 4-0 UGa UGa Qtrs 2007 4-1 UGa UGa Semis 2008 4-3 UGa UVa Semis 2009 4-0 USC USC Qtrs 2010 4-2 USC USC Semis 2011 4-3 USC USC Final 2012 4-2 USC UVa Final [Because NCAA tournament matches are halted as soon as either team has scored 4 points, it would be hard to say what the final team scores would have been if the halted matches were allowed to continue to completion. But it is clear that, at least in 2011, had UVa won the doubles point that year UVa would have won the national championship.] My point in the previous post was that UVa's doubles hasn't been as reliable was we would have liked in the big matches. I think the fact that (in its last match of the year) UVa won the doubles point only 3 times in the last 9 years supports this observation. Your point, however, is that we gotta win the singles and, implicitly, the doubles aren't that big of a factor. I think the fact that in the three years (2012, 2008, 2004) that UVa actually did win the doubles point, UVa still lost the match, is evidence that you are correct. I get that. As has been discussed on this board before, the NCAA championship tennis tournament is a LOT of tennis in a very short amount of time (typically three team matches over four days) and is invariably played at a hot time of the year. This puts a lot of wear and tear-- both physically and mentally-- on the players. This format is draining enough to begin with. I don't think there can be any denying that, after a team has expended an enormous amount of mental and physical energy in grueling doubles matches under a hot Georgia (or California or Oklahoma...) sun in a LOSING effort to capture the doubles point... it's difficult to gather up what it takes to win at least 4 out of 6 singles matches. It can be done; but it's difficult. In six out of the last nine seasons, UVa went into the singles portion of its final (i.e., losing) match down after having lost the doubles point... and knowing that it would go home a loser unless it were to win 4 out of the 6 singles contests. When you're already exhausted and disappointed and you're facing elite opponents like UGa, USC, UCLA and OSU, and you know your season ends if you don't win four out of six singles matches... well, you've got quite a mountain to climb. And knowing that HAS to have some impact on how the singles portion of the match plays out. This year I look forward to having the OTHER TEAMS face that mountain. |
