I'm sure the US could win a few more medals if we were allowed to take
our top performers from sports where there are a lot of possible
contenders but we can only bring 3 or 4 to the competition and then
split them out into 7 or more different US territories that competed
independently. You just have to look at the unexpected "misses" from
dominant team sports (softball), track and field, or judged competitions
to see why. There is always some level of luck in getting 3rd instead of
4th place, so having 15 extra competitors to eliminate others in the
semis and to sneak up for the bronze in the final would increase our
count as well. But congrats to the former USSR anyway.
