there isn't that much interest in women's basketball. Consequently for
the Daily Progress this was a business decision.

My counter, if I were to offer it, would be that this is something
like the chicken and the egg conundrum. If the newspaper covers it
there will be greater public interest. That there is a latent fan base
out there goes without saying. During the Dawn Staley years, and even
carrying over some into the Tora Suber years (if I recall correctly),
attendance for ACC home games typically was in the 6000s. I don't
pretend to compare the talent on this year's team with that of the
1990/91 squad, but it should be obvious to anyone who has attended
basketball games this year that under Coach Boyle we are going to be
making some noise in the not-too-distant future. Whether or not we
will ever again become a Final 4 team is not clear at this point, but
it certainly is a possibility down the road a bit. Probably if we keep
winning fan attendance will go up some, but with concomitant media
attention it will go up significantly farther and faster. Having
returned to my home state of Connecticut in the mid-90s, it was
totally mind-boggling to see the newspaper coverage given to Auriemma
and his team -- probably more than to Calhoun and his squad. And this
was every paper in the state: Norwich Bulletin, New London Day, New
Haven Register, Hartford Courant, Waterbury Republican, Danbury
News-times, etc. Which came first, the newspaper coverage or the
attendance? It's not clear. One thing that was of paramount importance
was that all of UConn's away games were carried on Connecticut Public
Television.
