Yes it can be a compliment. I used to play a lot of hoops on
playground courts when I was younger and took it as a compliment when folks did a double-take when they figured out I was a girl not a guy. But no one was questioning my gender or accusing me of being a man. People have been questioning Griner's sexuality in the social media. Kim Mulkey, her coach, has been very vocal about how cruel and unwarranted this is. Then the Notre Dame Coach in her post-game remarks says Griner plays like a man. It was not the comment so much as the environment in which it was made. McGraw should have been more sensitive. She could have just said the Griner plays at a level never seen before in the women's game. Yes I would be equally upset if Debbie Ryan or Tony Bennett had made the comment. I would hope both of them would be more aware and would never think of making the comment in the first place. |
