side as though they are the saints while the others are not. Let's
face facts, both side could have acted better. The guy who was cursing and trying to pick fights with JMU fans could have been ejected from the game, the JMU band could have been a little more cordial. With that said, have we really become a culture of thin skin that we have to complain about how bad one group of fans are to the their own? The culture of WBB is evolving, no doubt, and as it stands right now, the normal fan bases of most WBB teams are going to be older fans, those fans are set in their ways and when a younger fan base comes in to what they (the older fan) is use to and cheers or jeers out of the norm, it is going to to create some animosity between the fan bases. I have attended many UVA games and many JMU games and there are fans in both crowds that can handle themselves a little better. But the one thing I am not going to condemn a fan base for is how they cheer or jeer during games. To me, it is part of the game and if you cannot handle it, then you shouldn't be there. What fun is it if you go to a basketball game and the arena is quiet or their is limited cheering? With that said, there is a level of respect that is due, but booing an opponents team is not one of them, sorry. That is what makes home court advantage home court. The fans of the home team are suppose to get into the heads of the other team, suppose to give their team more momentum to win the game, if you as a fan base are not doing that, in my opinion you are not doing your job. Sunday's game was heavily contested and it was a game that both teams and fans wanted for their teams badly. The stakes were high and the atmosphere showed that. To be upset at some minor thing is rather dumb. Who cares if they booed your team, they are suppose to, who cares if they chanted 81 south, 64 east, they are suppose to. I would expect no different from fan base from any school. To me, it shows that they care about their team and care about their school to go out and cheer, to go out and truly have a home court advantage. Be respectful, absolutely, but do make it easy, to make it welcoming, no way. |
