UVa Vs. Virginia Tech Scouting Report: VT Offense
November 22, 2007

Image: Sean GlennonWith the return of several key injured players, Stella has apparently got her groove back offensively after a sluggish start. The Hokies have averaged 411 yards of offense over the last three games. Following a 395-yard effort against Florida State, offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring said, "We knew we'd improve and get better. It was just a matter of when. We got Ed [Wang] back in there and we feel we have our best line-up in there now. That makes a difference up front. And we've been getting good quarterback play from both Sean [Glennon] and Tyrod [Taylor]." Full Article
UVa Vs. Virginia Tech Scouting Report: VT Defense
November 21, 2007

Image: Xavier AdibiYou will hear about Beamerball, flashy quarterbacks, and speedy wide receivers over the next few days but make no mistake, Virginia Tech's success over the years has been predicated on defense. The Hokies are having another successful campaign and it is in large part due to a defense ranked among the top six nationally in rushing defense (#6), pass efficiency defense (#5), total defense (#5), and scoring defense (#4). Greg's Game Grades '07: Miami
November 13, 2007

Image: Jameel SewellMiami quarterback Kyle Wright may have said it best of the Hurricanes' 48-0 loss to Virginia, the Florida schools worst in almost a decade: “We got beat in every aspect of the game tonight. I can't explain the frustration.” It was the first time in the 2007 campaign the Cavaliers put together a complete effort from all three operations. The result was UM's worst defeat since a 66-13 road loss at Syracuse on November 28, 1998 and Virginia's best overall grade score in two seasons. Full Article
UVa At Miami Scouting Report: Special Teams
November 9, 2007

Image: Chris GouldVirginia's Chris Gould has been a valuable piece of the special teams puzzle this season. Obviously, his game-winning kicks against Middle Tennessee State and Connecticut provided the winning margin in those games. But he's also been a clutch performer with his pooch punting, an important piece of Virginia's victory against Wake Forest last week. Full Article
UVa At Miami Scouting Report: Miami Offense
November 8, 2007

Image: Miami HurricanesIn Larry Coker's first two seasons as Miami's head coach, the Hurricanes averaged 41.6 points per game, 189.5 yards rushing, and 272 yards passing. In Coker's final four season, UM netted 141.2 yards rushing and 215.5 yards passing, including last year's 116 yards rushing and 197 yards passing. It's easy to understand why, unlike a lot of new coordinators who often retain some systems and schemes, new Miami offensive coordinator Patrick Nix scrapped the spread offense and read-option. But as expected, the results have been mixed in year one. Full Article
2007-08 MBB Preview: Schedule Analysis
November 8, 2007

Image: Dave LeitaoIn college football, figuring out who receives a postseason bowl invitation is pretty straight forward. Teams with at least a 6-6 record are eligible and most conferences have bowl tie-ins, meaning only a handful of destinations are likely. College basketball on the other hand? Now that's a different story. The Sabre breaks down Virginia's schedule and the most likely route to the NCAA Tournament. Full Article
UVa At Miami Scouting Report: Miami Defense
November 7, 2007

Image: Miami HurricanesThe Miami Hurricanes were anxious to return to action last week against North Carolina State. They were coming off a bye week and they had completed one of the most exciting come-from-behind victories in school history against FSU the week prior. But that renewed confidence fell by the wayside with a 19-16 overtime loss to the surging Wolfpack. Over the last five games, the generally stout UM defense has struggled, giving up 352.8 yards per game. Full Article
Greg's Game Grades '07: Wake Forest
November 6, 2007

Image: Ian-Yates CunninghamIt's not "Greg's Game Grades" this week, it's "Reader's Game Grades" as Sabre Edge subscribers stepped in and took on the role of game graders. What they saw was an inconsistent day from the offense, a less than average effort from the special teams, and a pretty solid performance from the defense. Here is the report from Virginia's 17-16 victory against Wake Forest this weekend. Full Article
UVa Vs. Wake Forest Scouting Report: Special Teams
November 2, 2007

Image: Wake Forest Demon DeaconsIf it seems like the Virginia football team has faced dangerous returners on special teams a lot this season, that's because it has. Duke's Jabari Marshall, North Carolina's Brandon Tate, Middle Tennessee State's Desmond Gee and Damon Nickson, and N.C. State's Darrell Blackman all have impressive credentials. This week, you can add Wake Forest's Kevin Marion and Kenny Moore to the list. Full Article
UVa Vs. Wake Forest Scouting Report: Wake Offense
November 2, 2007

Image: Wake Forest Demon DeaconsDespite being 90th in total offense, Wake Forest's offense is very apropos for Halloween week - scary. Keep in mind, this is a team that was without quarterback Riley Skinner for several weeks, and one that has played solid defenses like Boston College, Maryland, and Florida State. The concern comes from the fact that Wake is a dangerous offense that features a veteran, talented offensive line and a bounty of speedy skill position players. Full Article
UVa Vs. Wake Forest Scouting Report: Wake Defense
November 1, 2007

Image: Wake Forest Demon DeaconsNumbers can be deceiving. Wake Forest is ninth in the ACC in overall defense (350.2 YPG), sixth in rushing defense, fifth in pass efficiency defense, and the Deacons have allowed the 8th most first downs among the 12 conference teams. They also allow more third down conversions than seven other clubs in the conference. So how are the Demon Deacons 6-2 overall and winners of six in a row? Wake has 13 interceptions and 11 fumble recoveries. Full Article
Greg's Game Grades '07: NCSU
October 30, 2007

Image: Chris GouldThe Cavaliers have certainly been living on the edge this season and that style of play finally caught up with the Hoos in Raleigh. The good news is this was not a game where Virginia simply did not show up. The game was in doubt until the final minutes despite the fact, frankly, that the contest could have been a State run-away. Full Article
Inside The Game: NCSU
October 30, 2007

Image: Jameel SewellVirginia has had less rushing attempts than passing attempts on offense only three times this season. The Cavaliers lost two of those games, including this past weekend's 29-24 loss at N.C. State. The Hoos rushed the ball just 36 times and a number of those were Jameel Sewell scrambles on non-running calls. That begs for one question. Why did UVa abandon the run? Full Article
UVa At N.C. State Scouting Report: Special Teams
October 26, 2007

Image: N.C. State WolfpackThe last time Virginia gave up a punt return for touchdown was on Nov. 13, 2004 when Miami's Roscoe Parrish sprinted 62 yards for the score. That return helped prevent UVa from sharing the ACC title, though a loss at Virginia Tech eventually finished the job. The goal on Oct. 27, 2007? Don't let N.C. State's Darrell Blackman produce a return that could be just as damaging. Full Article
UVa At N.C. State Scouting Report: NCSU Offense
October 25, 2007

Image: N.C. State WolfpackInconsistency, turnovers, and injuries have defined the Wolfpack offense thus far in 2007. The N.C. State coaches are hoping a bye week followed by the team's improved play against East Carolina are harbingers of things to come. One thing that got better against ECU? Turnovers. But despite breaking even in that category against East Carolina, N.C. State still ranks dead last in the nation (119th) in turnover margin. Full Article
UVa At N.C. State Scouting Report: NCSU Defense
October 24, 2007

Image: N.C. State WolfpackPrior to the East Carolina game Coach Tom O'Brien and the Wolfpack staff used the off week to focus on fundamentals in an attempt to get a struggling defense (and offense) back on track. It appeared to have succeeded as the Pack went to Greenville and got off the losing slide against Bowl Subdivision opponents. With that said, N.C. State ranks 103rd in rush defense, 76th in total defense, 68th in scoring defense, and 62nd in sacks per game through the first seven games of the year. Full Article
Greg's Game Grades '07: Maryland
October 23, 2007

Image: Jameel SewellVirginia squeaked out another win this past weekend by defeating Maryland 18-17. Mikell Simpson and Chris Long stole the spotlight with a pair of outstanding performances in the win. Of course, Jameel Sewell engineered another game-winning drive, Nate Lyles made some key stops, and Chris Gould had a solid night punting. What do the grades look like against the Terps? Full Article
UVa Vs. Maryland Scouting Report: Maryland Special Teams
October 19, 2007

Image: Maryland TerrapinsWith Maryland on the schedule this week, there is an obvious special teams theme in the storyline: fumbles. After all, a mishandled attempt at fielding a punt last season against the Terps allowed them to rally from a 20-0 deficit and defeat the Hoos 28-26. If that had happened this season, the fated bobble would have plenty of company. After all, the Cavaliers have lost 6 fumbles this season (15 total fumbles) and 4 of those have come on special teams. Full Article
UVa vs. Maryland Scouting Report: Maryland Offense
October 18, 2007

Image: Maryland TerrapinsThe Terps' offense is led by a solid ground game, which features senior backs Lance Ball and Keon Lattimore. Lattimore ranks third in the ACC and 40th nationally in rushing, and has tallied a league-high eight rushing TDs. Maryland's 162.0 rushing yards per game ranks second in the ACC. Full Article
UVa vs. Maryland Scouting Report: Maryland Defense
October 17, 2007

Image: Maryland TerrapinsThe Terrapins have been fairly solid on the defensive side of the ball for most of the season. The Terps come into the weekend ranked 43rd nationally in total defense (345.17 ypg), including the 30th-ranked pass defense (198.33 ypg). In their victory over 10th ranked Rutgers, the Terps held the nations 9th best offense to 392 total yards. The Scarlet Knights came into the game averaging 525.0 ypg. Full Article
Greg's Game Grades '07: UConn
October 16, 2007

Image: Vic HallClearly the loss of Cedric Peerman was evident as the Virginia running game was fairly pedestrian Saturday. The loss of Rashawn Jackson early in the game didn't help matters. The quarterbacks delivered another consistent performance (not to suggest superior), but we've come to know what to expect. The return operation continues to be an issue for the special teams with poor decisions, turnovers and most discouraging, poor production. Full Article
Inside the Game: UConn
October 15, 2007

Image: Jameel SewellFor the second week in a row Jameel Sewell led his team to a victory on a late fourth quarter drive and Chris Gould made the connection to successfully complete the drive. The drive began from the Cavalier 20-yard line with Virginia down by two points with 3:22 left in the game. Full Article
UVa Vs. UConn Scouting Report: Special Teams
October 12, 2007

Image: Connecticut HuskiesFor the majority of Al Groh's tenure at Virginia, one thing the Cavaliers have done well is return kicks. Marquis Weeks streaking upfield against North Carolina immediately comes to mind. Alvin Pearman, Cedric Peerman, and even Ahmad Brooks have had success in that role at times. With kickoffs moving back 5 yards in 2007, the Hoos' return game logically seemed poised to get even better. At least in theory. In reality, the kickoff return game has been rather bland. Full Article
UVa Vs. UConn Scouting Report: UConn Offense
October 11, 2007

Image: Connecticut HuskiesFor the third time this season, the Hoos could be one of the biggest games of the year for an opponent. The Cavaliers have been the headlining target for Wyoming and Middle Tennessee on the road and now are the "biggest game of the year" for a third opponent, this time in the friendly confines of Scott Stadium. The offense is led by JUCO transfer Tyler Lorenzen, who had 354 total yards against ACC foe Duke. Connecticut's offense also features a pair of dynamic running backs that have combined for 623 rushing yards and an impressive 5.1 yards per carry. Full Article
UVa Vs. UConn Scouting Report: UConn Defense
October 10, 2007

Image: Connecticut HuskiesConnecticut ranks fourth nationally in total defense, yielding just 250.60 yards per game, and fourth in scoring defense at 11 points per game. UConn is eighth in passing efficiency defense and 15th nationally against the run at 89.20 yards per game. While all of those number are nice, where the Huskies have been the most dangerous is in forcing turnovers. Connecticut's 11 interceptions tie for fifth nationally and 44 of 145 points against Division 1-A opponents have come as a result of turnovers. That's nearly one-third of the team's points.
