Finding Peace Despite Defeat
June 25, 2011
Just 12 days ago, I wrote that there is a fine line between dejection and delirium. That Super Regional win and scene on a perfect Monday night couldn't have been scripted any better. I wish I didn't have to be reminded so soon of how the other end feels, though. Losing 3-2 in the bottom of the 13th inning in an epic College World Series elimination game? You won't find too many things in sports more disappointing than that.

The loss dropped the Hoos to a 56-12 final mark for the season and eliminated the Cavaliers from the CWS in Omaha. John Hicks looks like Disney's Hercules come to life. He's a tall, statuesque figure with sandy blonde hair and grins like he's having the time of his life. Hicks carries a big club like the figure from mythology too. In Omaha on Sunday, the Virginia catcher used that bat to break a scoreless tie and propel the Cavaliers past California 4-1 in bracket play at the College World Series.

Euphoric Ending Lifts Hoos Into CWS
June 13, 2011
There is the thinnest of lines between dejection and delirium. Second guessing and elation. As Virginia's dugout and stands tight-roped that line Monday evening, a somewhat eerie feeling hung heavily over Davenport Field. Super Regional winner-take-all Game 3. Bottom of the ninth. Down one. Two outs, two strikes, nobody on for David Coleman. A historic baseball season sat in the balance. Then a hit and a sliver of hope. A fortuitous bounce, a four-pitch walk, and Chris Taylor's dancing single up the middle. All a blur really.
Euphoria.

In Super Opener, It's Good To Be King
June 11, 2011
With two starting pitchers with excellent records and statistics on the mound of Saturday's Charlottesville Super Regional, many expected a low-scoring affair between top-seeded Virginia and visiting UC Irvine. After all, the Hoos' Danny Hultzen and the Anteaters' Matt Summers entered the game with a combined 3.29 ERA between them. UVa first baseman Jared King changed all of that with one swing, however, and the Cavaliers moved within one win of the College World Series with a 6-0 victory.
