The Hurricane's blow out of Charlottesville taking the series and Virginia's win-streak with them. In a game that featured four lead changes in only eight innings play (because of ACC travel restrictions), Miami landed on top, stealing the rubber match 7-5. But if they couldn’t pull out the win, Virginia Coach Brian O’Connor will take some solace in the fact that his team provided a gritty, hard-fought battle.

Around The Horn: Freshmen Playing Well

In our preseason look at Virginia baseball, one of the questions facing the Hoos in 2008 was "Which freshmen will be relied upon to contribute?" The ultimate answer proved to be "all of them." After some regular season struggles, it appears the rookies have arrived. The five freshmen hit a combined .392 (20 of 51) in the ACC Tournament and accounted for 48% of Virginia's runs and 65% of its RBI.

Around The Horn: Hoping For Postseason Magic
May 20, 2008
During the first four seasons of Brian O'Connor's tenure, the Cavaliers have entered the ACC Tournament seeded below third only once. The lone exception to high seeding status up until now was 2006 when Virginia finished the ACC season at 14-14, which was good enough for the seventh seed in the league tourney. The Cavaliers started 3-0 that year and made it to Championship Sunday. The sixth-seeded Cavs (36-19, 15-15 ACC) are hoping the same karma that surrounded that 2006 team will find them in 2008.

Around The Horn: Struggling Down The Stretch
May 15, 2008
Over the past four years the Virginia baseball team has consistently ended the regular season on a positive note, averaging 7.75 wins in its final 10 regular season outings. The Jackets arrive as winners of 9 of their last 12 games while Virginia staggers into its ACC season finale as losers in 6 of 10. Around The Horn: McAnaney's Groove
April 17, 2008
2008 has been a good year for Virginia left-hander Pat McAnaney. He leads the conference in innings pitched, strikeouts and complete games in ACC play. Among starters, he has the lowest ERA in the conference (2.48) and has allowed the lowest batting average (.191) in the league. That's all good. A not-so-good 2007 may have been what triggered McAnaney's surge as a senior.

Around The Horn: A Defining Moment Needed
April 10, 2008
Former Cavalier football coach George Welsh never liked to use the word 'huge' in reference to a game. Brian O'Connor diligently tries to keep his charges from getting too hyped up over big wins or too down following disappointments. But this upcoming weekend series with Maryland, with all due apologies to Coach Welsh, is huge.

Around The Horn: Thompson Finds Groove
April 3, 2008
All-American hurler Jacob Thompson would be the first to tell you he was not having a very All-American season to open the 2008 campaign. In his first six outings of the year, Thompson collected just 27.1 innings of work, allowed 25 hits, 10 earned runs, and15 walks while fanning 34 batters. His record shook out at 3-0.
Good numbers for most pitchers but not for Virginia's career leader in victories. In his first two seasons as a Cavalier, Thompson averaged 31.1 innings, surrendered 26 hits, allowed 9.5 earned runs and 11.2 walks, and delivered 35 strikeouts in his first six starts. He opened the year 5-0 in each season. So what was different in 2008?

Around The Horn: Role Reversal
March 27, 2008
Six times last season Andrew Carraway came into a game in relief of starter Matt Packer. On March 16, 2008 against Duke, those roles reversed as Matt Packer entered the game in the sixth inning to relieve Carraway in Virginia's 4-1 loss in Durham. This past weekend, Packer again picked up his teammate, this time with a different outcome as the Hoos outlasted Boston College 8-6.

Around The Horn: Grovatt Going Early
March 21, 2008
First-year outfielder Dan Grovatt did not arrive in Charlottesville with the accolades of many of his recruiting class peers, but he did arrive with a serious work ethic and an ability to hit a baseball. That seemed evident when he hit .435 in the Orange and Blue World Series last fall. The question was could he do it when it mattered? So far, so good.

Region Relapse: UVa's Been There, Done That
June 6, 2007
This is not the first time a Virginia baseball club has seen this. In 2004, the Cavaliers watched the Vanderbilt Commodores celebrate a regional victory on the Bermuda turf of Davenport Field. Last year, they watched the South Carolina Gamecocks party their way to the Super Regionals on that same turf. Tuesday, it was Oregon State high-fiving after its ninth consecutive NCAA Tournament elimination game victory.
So what happened this time?

NCAA Tournament Notes: Disappointing End
June 5, 2007
After starting 2-0 in the 2007 NCAA Regional, the Virginia baseball team couldn't close the deal as Oregon State won three straight games, including Tuesday's elimination game, to advance. For the Hoos, they conclude their season for the fourth time in the last four years with a regional loss - three times on their home turf. The loss ends the seniors' UVa careers.

Hoos Squander McAnaney's Solid Start
June 5, 2007
There was plenty of blame to go around following Virginia's 5-3 collapse Monday night against the Oregon State Beavers. Horrendous defense as Virginia tied its season high with four errors. Timid plate appearances as the Hoos were set down by strikeout 11 times, seven looking. A lack of clutch pitching as relievers Jake Rule and Michael Schwimer allowed four earned runs on six hits and turned a two-run lead into a two-run defeat.
But don't blame Pat McAnaney.

Scaglione, Hoos Defy Baseball Gods
June 3, 2007
ESPN 840's Wes McElroy said it best - the baseball gods were not smiling on Virginia Saturday night. Doolittle Sets Tone With Strong Start

The right fielder then added singles in the second, fourth, and seventh innings. Plus, he picked up a stolen base.
