Terrapins Topple Cavaliers
March 5, 2006

Image: J.R. ReynoldsWith less than 2 minutes remaining Sunday, it seemed as if University Hall had one last regular-season hoorah up its old sleeve. After all, Virginia had rallied back from an 18-point second-half deficit to take the lead and the hosts had possession of the ball. In a matter of moments, however, everything changed. UVa missed a shot, Maryland hit a 3-pointer in transition, and the Terrapins spoiled the party with a 71-70 victory over the Cavaliers despite 30 points from J.R. Reynolds. Full Article

March 1, 2006

Image: Mike CampagnaOn the baseball diamond the last two years, much of Virginia's success can be attributed to defense. The Cavaliers back up excellent pitching with strong play in the field, where players like shortstop Mike Campagna make routine plays and record timely outs regularly. Continuing the streak of solid defense will be a critical ingredient for the Cavs again this season. Full Article
Young Pitching Could Be Key For Cavaliers
February 28, 2006

Image: Craig HansenAfter defeating George Washington 11-5 on Tuesday, coach Brian O'Connor and the Virginia baseball squad have opened 2006 with a 9-2 record. This comes on the heels of the most successful two-year stretch in the history of Cavalier baseball. Under O'Connor's tutelage, Virginia finished second during the 2004 ACC regular season going 44-15 overall and 18-6 in league play. UVa's 44 overall victories that year tied the school-record for most wins and Virginia's 18 ACC victories were the most in school history. Last season, the Cavaliers compiled a 41-20 record and reached the championship game of the ACC Baseball Tournament before competing in the NCAA Tournament for a second consecutive season. June 14, 2005

Image: Coach Brian O'ConnorThe Virginia baseball program has already reached new heights under Brian O'Connor. With consecutive 40-win seasons and NCAA tournament appearances, the Cavaliers have put together the best back-to-back years in the program's long history. But where do they go from here? Here's an early look at who's gone, who's back and the impact newcomers for 2006. We'll also explore what needs to happen for the program to reach the next level. Will we be seeing the 'Hoos in Omaha anytime soon? Full Article
Zimmerman Picked #4 in Draft by Nats
June 8, 2005

Image: Ryan ZimmermanArguably the greatest baseball player in University of Virginia history knew Monday night that he would be the fourth overall pick in the Major League Baseball draft. That became official Tuesday when Ryan Zimmerman was selected by the Washington Nationals. “It's been a pretty amazing day for me,” Zimmerman said Tuesday afternoon. “I have 20 or 30 of my closest friends with me out here at the house and it was pretty amazing when they called my name and also pretty emotional. It's nice to know all of the hard work paid off.” Full Article
Ohio State Ousts UVa in NCAAs
June 5, 2005

Image: Ryan ZimmermanA highly questionable Ryan Zimmerman error in the bottom of the ninth ultimately led to the game-winning run as Ohio State dispatched Virginia, 2-1, on Saturday in NCAA tournament action in Corvallis, Ore. Dan DeLucia (6-5) pitched a four-hit complete game and the Buckeyes (40-19) sent the Cavaliers (41-20) packing from an early exit in the double-elimination regional. UVa fell to St. John's, 5-3, in its opening game Friday. Full Article
Red Storm Calm Cavalier Bats
June 3, 2005

Image: Matt AverySt. John's shortstop P.J. Antoniato slapped a bases-loaded single in the sixth inning to break open a tied game and provide the margin of victory in Virginia's 5-3 loss today in the opening game of the NCAA tournament's Corvallis (Ore.) Regional. The Cavaliers failed to muster much offense against St John's shutdown closer Craig Hansen and three relievers. Meanwhile, UVa starter Matt Avery struggled with his control and didn't survive the fifth inning. Full Article
'Hoos Got a Whole Lot of Glove
June 3, 2005

Image: Mike CampagnaEveryone has heard the adage that “defense wins championships,” especially in relation to football. A quick look at the statistics reveals the same is true of college baseball. The best defensive teams often end up in Omaha playing in the College World Series. That bodes well for Virginia, which is among the top fielding teams in the NCAA tournament. Why are shortstop Mike Campagna and the Cavs so good with their gloves? What makes them exceptional fielders? And how much might that matter this month? Full Article
NCAA Preview: Regional Packed With Pitchers
June 2, 2005

Image: Craig HansenFor the Virginia baseball team, the road to Omaha (or so the Cavs hope) begins in Oregon. The Wahoos are in the NCAA tournament for the second straight year and fifth time overall. They have never advanced past the regional round, but they are optimistic going into this weekend's action in Corvallis. As the #2 seed in the regional, Virginia will battle top seed and host Oregon State, #3 seed St. John's and #4 seed Ohio State in a double-elimination format. All four teams have excellent ERAs. There are many outstanding pitchers coming to Corvallis, including St. John's closer Craig Hansen. Full Article
Around the Horn: Cavs Nearly Capture Championship
May 30, 2005

Image: Ryan ZimmermanVirginia used uncharacteristically superb hitting to get to the ACC Tournament final, but it was uncharacteristically wild pitching that ultimately cost the Cavaliers the championship. Georgia Tech won its third ACC crown of the decade and its seventh overall with a 4-3 win over the Cavs on Sunday. The win was Tech's first over the 'Hoos since May 11, 2003. Virginia pitchers yielded 11 walks, including two with the bases loaded, and allowed a run on a wild pitch in the title game. Still, the 'Hoos (41-18) earned an NCAA tournament bid for the second straight year. They will be the #2 seed in the four-team subregional in Corvallis, Oregon, and will face #3 seed St. John's on Friday. Oregon State is the top seed and host, while Ohio State is the #4 seed. May 25, 2005

Image: Coach Brian O'ConnorUVa fans already know that Brian O'Connor is the man who has transformed Cavalier baseball, winning 82 games (and counting) in two seasons while injecting energy, enthusiasm and optimism into a historically mediocre program. But what is his background? What's his personality? Why is he such an outstanding recruiter and coach? Two of his mentors from Creighton and Notre Dame shed some light on what makes O'Connor so successful. Full Article
Around the Horn: 'Hoos are Hot Entering ACCs
May 23, 2005

Image: Sean DoolittleThe final week of the regular season was busy, important and ultimately successful for the Virginia baseball team. On the bubble for an NCAA tournament bid, the Cavs started the week with a pair of nonconference wins, then completed the ACC season with a three-game sweep of Duke. Led by freshman Sean Doolittle, Virginia (38-17, 14-14 ACC) managed to finish .500 in conference play, secure the #7 seed in the ACC tournament and improve its position with the NCAA tournament selection committee. Around the Horn: Cavaliers Control Destiny
May 16, 2005

Image: Mike BallardDuring their magical 2004 season, the Cavaliers were masters at the come-from-behind and one-run victory. This year Virginia has struggled to get the critical hits in clutch situations and frequently failed to pull out the close games it routinely won a year ago. Continuing that trend, UVa lost its first two games against Miami last weekend by a single run. But a 4-3 victory Sunday allowed the Cavs to pull ahead of Wake Forest for the critical No. 7 spot in the ACC standings going into the final week of the regular season. Full Article
Cavs Find Themselves in a Precarious Position
May 13, 2005

Image: Coach Brian O'ConnorWith just two weekends remaining before the ACC baseball tournament, the seedings are starting to clarify a little. Miami, North Carolina and Georgia Tech will battle for the ACC regular-season crown, while Maryland, Duke and Virginia Tech in all probability will be relegated to the four-team ACC mini-tournament. The only real question remaining is who will join the Terps, Hokies and Blue Devils. Unfortunately, the 'Hoos are in the mix. Full Article
Around the Horn: The Lull Before the Storm
May 10, 2005

Image: Robert PoutierThe Virginia baseball team is in the midst of a nine-day break for final exams. But when that's over, the Cavaliers will face one of their toughest tests of the season. No. 4 Miami comes to Charlottesville this weekend for a critical three-game series. At 32-15 overall and 10-12 in the ACC, the Wahoos need a strong finish to earn an NCAA tournament bid. Full Article
Around the Horn: Big Innings Lead to Big Losses
May 3, 2005

Image: Mike BallardThe Virginia baseball team entered last weekend's series at Florida State on a hot streak, having won six in a row and nine of the last 11. One key to that success was avoiding the big inning on defense. In those 11 games (with the notable exception of a 13-4 loss to Clemson), the 'Hoos had yielded more than one run in an inning just three times (a span of 91 innings). Overall, they held opponents to two runs or fewer in eight of the 11 contests. Unfortunately, that trend did not continue in Tallahassee. The Seminoles used two big innings to win two of three games, dropping the Cavaliers to 31-15 overall and 10-12 in the ACC. Full Article
Around the Horn: "Back in the Mix"
April 27, 2005

Image: Sean DoolittleThe Virginia baseball team took a huge step toward getting back in the NCAA tournament mix with a three-game sweep of #4 Georgia Tech over the weekend. Combined with a midweek win over Longwood, the Cavaliers improved to 29-13 overall and 9-10 in the ACC. Last year it was a three-game sweep of the Yellow Jackets that helped UVa earn an NCAA tournament berth. The Wahoos hope this will serve as the same kind of catalyst. Full Article
Around the Horn: Bats Show Signs of Life
April 20, 2005

Image: Ryan ZimmermanWith Josh Darby, Tom Hagan and Mike Mitchell all returning from injury and needing extra work, the always-thinking Brian O'Connor secured a mid-week doubleheader to get his guys some additional reps. That paid off with a few more at-bats and a few more wins, but didn't prevent another disappointing weekend for the Cavaliers. Virginia ripped off three wins over two overmatched MEAC opponents but struggled again in ACC play, losing two of three to the Clemson Tigers last weekend. UVa improved its overall record to 25-13 but its conference mark fell to 6-10. Full Article
Scott Headd: UVa's 'Heart and Soul'
April 13, 2005

Image: Scott HeaddOf all the positions in all the games we play, the catcher may be the most underappreciated man in sports. Nobody on the baseball field has more responsibility than a catcher. He calls the pitches, monitors the pitcher's attitude and psyche, works the plate umpire, adjusts the defense, defends against the running game, defends the bunt, takes signals from four different people and, if that's not enough, he has to catch the darn ball while guys are swinging pieces of metal inches away from his head. Fun stuff. But on the Virginia baseball team, there is no lack of appreciation for catcher Scott Headd. Full Article
Around the Horn: Sound of Silent Bats
April 12, 2005

Image: Matt AveryAfter belting out four home runs against Liberty last Tuesday evening, the Virginia bats went silent as the Cavs lost two of three in a critical ACC series against N.C. State this past weekend. The 'Hoos produced only 16 hits (just four for extra bases) and two runs in the three games while falling to 5-8 in the ACC (21-11 overall). Fortunately, Matt Avery pitched brilliantly in Friday's victory, yielding just two hits and no runs in eight innings. Full Article
