Never apologize for a win. Ever. Miami may be down right now ... but the Hoos have been, too. So was FSU a couple of weeks ago and that did not work out so well for Virginia. The Cavaliers needed to execute. They did. The Cavaliers needed a win. They got one, and on Senior Day. So no apologies accepted, here are "10 Things I Learned Against Miami".

2006-07 MBB Preview: 10 Things To Look Forward To
November 9, 2006
The leaves are past peak, Halloween is a memory, and the holiday commercials are creeping onto our televisions. The unmistakable harbingers of another basketball season! In our recent past, basketball season was that bleak period of time when we'd debate tourney snubs and buy-out clauses. The Gillenium conditioned me to dread the months from November through March. Well, for the first time in many seasons, I'm actually looking forward to a number of things as the Hoos hit the hardwood - so many that I could even compile a Top 10 list!

Jed's Best Seat Buzz: Does Leitao's Team Have "It"?
November 8, 2006
“It.”
The latest, greatest sports platitude - heir to the “help my team win” and “give 110 percent” throne - “it” gets tossed about these days without much hesitation or thought. All of which seems unfair, untrue, and misplaced. Because only a select smattering of teams exude anything remotely resembling “it.”
Of the UVa programs that I've covered directly as a broadcaster and reporter over the last seven years, I recall only three “it” squads. But there may be another one waiting in the wings for 2006-07.

10 Things I Learned Against FSU
November 8, 2006
The Virginia football team added another game to its losing streak in the state of Florida last weekend with a 33-0 loss at Florida State. The Seminoles jumped out to an early 14-0 lead and the final margin truly grew after halftime. Despite the disappointing defeat, the game is still worth a closer look. Here's 10 Things I Learned Against Florida State.

The Hawk's Nest - Tough Places To Play
November 2, 2006
With a hard fought 14-7 win last week against N.C. State, the Virginia Cavaliers look to keep the winning ball rolling this Saturday against the Florida State Seminoles. The Cavs will be looking to add to their winning streak of two games and also will be trying to win their first ever game in Tallahassee. It won't be easy because Florida State has one of the toughest venues in college football.

Jed's Best Seat Buzz: Learning How To Win
November 1, 2006
To some, it was a droll 14-7 grinder (a good buddy of mine called it “the most boring game EVER!”). A puntfest (17 combined) as much as a pointfest. A lazy autumn afternoon at The Scott where you could safely nod off for a couple of hours and miss virtually nothing ... at least the scoreboard would tell you as much. I'll take a different, far stronger tack on Virginia's narrow win over N.C. State. Landmark.

A Fan's Notes from the Upper Deck - N.C. State
November 1, 2006
Every year, my group of college buddies picks a Virginia football game as the stage for our annual reunion. Often, we stage the annual gathering at a road game to witness the college football environment of another program: Wisconsin, Penn State, Boston College, and South Carolina are examples. And while we enjoy visiting new schools and stadiums, our favorite reunions are the years we pick a home game. And this year, we luckily picked the battle against the Wolfpack.

Back-to-back wins. Wow, that sounds good. It certainly makes this article more pleasant to write. So after beating the Wolfpack 14-7 on Saturday, Virginia enters November with a two-game winning streak. Was there anything in the weekend's victory to indicate more success could be waiting in the final month? Here are 10 Things I learned against N.C. State.

The Hawk's Nest - Noon Games Provide Test
October 26, 2006
The Cavaliers once again find themselves playing in front of their home crowd. Unlike the past two home contests, the Hoos will have to play a noon game. The Cavs have only played one game this year at noon and that was against Duke. In my opinion, noon games are one of the tougher games to play. Players have to get up about 8 a.m. the day of the game, eat breakfast, and then load up the bus and get ready to play a football game.

Jed's Best Seat Buzz: The Likeability Quotient
October 25, 2006
This past weekend - with Virginia enjoying a blessed Saturday off after its pasting of North Carolina on Thursday - I made my annual fall pilgrimage to Norman, Oklahoma to breathe in some OU Football. It's a trip that always gets me excited because it's can't miss college football culture. As for the 2006 team itself, well, I'm not so sure. Why? It has everything to do with something I call “the likeability quotient.”

10 Things I Learned Against North Carolina
October 20, 2006
Virginia's 23-0 win over North Carolina may not have been the picture of perfection or a display of domination, but the Cavaliers did get the victory - and that's always a good thing. Plus, there were some very positive signs for the future. Take Chris Cook's interception or Jameel Sewell's continued development for example. Those are among the “10 Things I Learned Against North Carolina.”

The Hawk's Nest - Bragging Rights Were Mine
October 19, 2006
After a very disappointing loss last Saturday to Maryland, the Cavs look to get back on track against UNC. When I was at UVa, the coaches seemed to really get up for this game. Besides playing Virginia Tech, the week of preparation for UNC was always intense. We never wanted to lose to North Carolina, especially at home.

Jed's Best Seat Buzz: Can't Have It Both Ways
October 18, 2006
“Virginia is for lovers.” We've all seen them … those simple words, that simple message stretched across the rear fender of a car. Perfect bumper sticker material.
If only summing up the state of Virginia Football were so easy. Being a Virginia Football fan these days is a conflicting, confusing exercise, full of emotions that don't fit neatly on a bumper sticker that you can purchase for $.99 at the Bookstore tomorrow night.

A Fan's Notes from the Upper Deck - Maryland
October 17, 2006
The weather was perfect, the fall air and turning leaves beckoning us all to Charlottesville. It didn't take much to convince Mrs. Vandy-Hoo to join me for my second home game of the year. And, as a result, I'm brimming with thoughts that I just can't wait to share with you all. Because I missed the WMU game because of a 1-year-old's birthday party, you're about to be served with only the second installment of my notes from the upper deck with mustard and relish. Eat up!

The Hawk's Nest - Terp Rivalry Better In C'Ville
October 12, 2006
This Saturday the Virginia Cavaliers are back in front of a home crowd for the first time in a month when they take on the visiting Maryland Terrapins. Unlike the past two weeks, the Cavs should not have a problem getting themselves motivated for this game. Records are never a factor when playing the Terps.

Jed's Best Seat Buzz: Say Anything?
October 11, 2006
For the first time in two years, the “parentals” - Joe and Sandy W - are arriving on the scene this weekend to absorb the sights and sounds of Virginia Football. I shudder at the thought of what those sights and sounds might be should, heaven forbid, the Wahoos lose.
And, at some point this weekend, my mom and I will fight. I'll say something regrettable. My mother will call me on it. And the line she'll use is the same one she's been pounding home since I was fingerpainting: “Some things are better left unsaid.”

10 Things I Learned Against ECU
October 9, 2006
What does the loss to ECU mean? That is a question I was asked right after the final whistle. I was not sure how to answer it then, and I am not sure how to answer it now. So let's break it down. Here are "10 Things I Learned Against East Carolina" - including the fact that the wide receivers need to make more of the difficult catches.

Sewell Taking Baby Steps Toward Success
October 6, 2006
The game against Duke was a success. But I'm not talking about the kind of success measured in points and wins. In this rebuilding season, we might actually be rebuilding the most important position on the team. Jameel Sewell, in the second start of his college career, took some important steps toward becoming a quality quarterback.

The Hawk's Nest - Mental Toughness Needed
October 5, 2006
The Cavaliers travel for the third straight time this week with a trip to East Carolina. When I was at UVa we never played three straight road games, so I can only imagine what type of mental toughness these guys will have to win this next game. It will be very important for the Cavs to build an early lead to help with their chances to win - ECU will be playing with a lot of emotion because they want the satisfaction of beating one of the known teams from the ACC.

10 Things I Learned Against Duke
October 2, 2006
Ah, 37-0. I like that score a lot better. As long as we have the 37, that is. Even if it was Duke. There are many positives to take out of this win, a few negatives lingering, and quite a few questions still unanswered. Still, this week feels a lot better than the last few and I learned some important things this week - including something about true freshman Nate Collins.

The Hawk's Nest - Self Motivation Required At Duke
September 28, 2006
The Cavaliers are usually “expected”, by the fans, to beat Duke. But I don't think Coach Al Groh will allow this team to go into Durham expecting Duke to just lie down. The fact that the Cavs are off to a 1-3 start will play a huge part in being ready to play - the players have to know that nothing is an easy task right now. The fact that they are playing in Durham, makes it that much tougher to win.

Vandy-Hoo's Running Look at UVa-Georgia Tech
September 22, 2006
Alright, got my beer in hand - a well deserved drink after wrasslin' with gutter debris all afternoon - and the game coverage is firing up. I'm sipping my Yuengling, getting relaxed, ready to settle in for some Thursday night football - my mind wandering a little about some errands ... maybe I'll pay some bills, read a magazine while the game plays in the background. Who am I kidding? There's a game on.
