Game Preview 2009 - Clemson
November 20, 2009
If a football team doesn't contain its opponent's ground attack, it usually doesn't win too many games. Virginia has defended the run on occasion - but against teams whose running game is its strength, the Hoos have consistently faltered. Unless a Virginia team that ranks 118th out of 120 teams in FBS offense has an uncharacteristically big day on the road against Clemson this Saturday, the Cavaliers will have to contain C.J. Spiller and the Tiger running game to have a shot at winning.

November 18, 2009

Greg's Stock Report '09: BC
November 18, 2009
"They call it a game of inches," Virginia coach Al Groh proclaimed. Six inches may have been the difference, but is shouldn't have been. The Cavalier defense held the Eagles to their third lowest offensive output of the season (303 yards), their second lowest point total and their third lowest third down conversion mark of 2009. But in what has become standard operating procedure for the boys in orange and blue, Virginia's anemic offense and anything but special teams found ways to lose. The biggest culprit on this afternoon? Untimely penalties and dropped passes.

Dinwiddie Junior QB Delivering Solid Season
November 17, 2009
Dinwiddie (VA) junior Chris Hall had never played quarterback before high school. One day his freshman year, a Dinwiddie coach asked him to come out and try out at quarterback. Showing off his arm strength by throwing an 80-yard pass, Hall was quickly moved to quarterback and earned the backup spot to all-everything signal caller Adam Morgan last season. This season, the 6-4, 220-pound prospect has been the leader of the Generals offense and has done well.

Press Conference Notes '09: Clemson
November 17, 2009
As Virginia's losing streak has drawn on, all of these motivations have been posed to Cavalier players by reporters as possible reasons to keep playing hard. After the Hoos' loss to Boston College on Saturday, even a faint chance at bowl eligibility washed away. With no playoff aspirations, what do you play for? The players' most common answer, both this week and last, is pride. Virginia coach Al Groh, however, likes to think that this attitude is merely the status quo.

10 Things I Learned From BC
November 17, 2009
If you thought it was fun to read my column after our third straight loss, I can only imagine how giddy with anticipation you are this week. Just like a coach has to break down the film after a win or a loss, however, I must write. But unlike a coach, I can take a little license with my column. So we will have a little breakdown, a little looking back, a little looking forward ... really, a little bit of everything. Or, at least, 10 Things of a little bit of everything.

BC Bounces Virginia
November 14, 2009
The pain was etched all over Jameel Sewell's face.
For the most part, as he responded to reporters' questions at a voice barely above a whisper, he fixated his gaze firmly on his feet, with his dreadlocks hung over his head like a wilting plant desperate for sunlight. Occasionally, he looked up, providing a teary gaze to the cameras - or at least in their general direction. Always, he gave the look of a man stunned, shattered emotionally by yet another defeat.
"It hurts," Sewell said. "It hurts a lot."

Short Yardage Situations Cost UVa
November 14, 2009
When Al Groh first stepped onto Virginia's sidelines in 2001, one axiom that immediately joined the Cavalier lexicon was "face in the fan" terminology. The general idea is one of toughness; you have to be willing to stand in there with the wind in your face and tough it out.
That lingo has long since trickled out of the UVa football language. Perhaps it's fitting, though. Much of the toughness has long since trickled out of the UVa football program, which has now suffered three losing seasons in four years. Boston College guaranteed the latest version of sub-.500 with a 14-10 win at Scott Stadium.

Game Preview 2009 - BC
November 12, 2009
When discussing Boston College in his weekly press conference, Virginia coach Al Groh said that BC is a "visually pleasing team to watch play." For Cavalier fans, watching the Eagles on Saturday may be a little bit confusing. Why? Because if Boston College were wearing orange and blue, you'd swear that it could be the UVa teams of yesteryear.

6-4, 265-pound tight end/defensive end Ethan Farmer, one of the top remaining uncommitted senior prospects in the state of North Carolina, concluded his high school career last week and will now work towards figuring out where he will attend college. The talented prospect boasts double-digit scholarship offers, but there are some programs that have impressed more than others as he figures out where he will visit.

Press Conference Notes '09: BC
November 10, 2009
As the Virginia football team dives lower and lower in the conference standings with each double-digit loss, the opposing teams on the slate don't get any easier. All three remaining teams on the Cavaliers' schedule currently have six wins or more, including Boston College, who comes to Scott Stadium this Saturday. That makes a total of eight Virginia opponents this season who have at least six wins - the Hoos' schedule currently ranks ninth nationally in the NCAA.

Greg's Stock Report '09: Miami
November 10, 2009
Saturday's game against Miami was every bit as ugly as the 35-point margin would suggest. The Wahoos' defensive struggles were matched on special teams and surpassed by the offense's ineptitude. Virginia, which entered the game ranked 116th out of 120 FBS teams in total offense, managed to actually drop in those rankings to 119th. Not surprisingly, for the third consecutive week and the fifth time this season, the offense's grade drops into the D or below range.

10 Things I Learned From Miami
November 9, 2009
Earlier this week, someone on the EDGE board asked me if I was going to the Navy-Notre Dame game this weekend. On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do you think I wish the answer had been "yes"?
Now, after watching my recording of the Navy-Notre Dame about ... oh ... say ... 11 times, it is time to go back through the Hoos' match-up versus the Hurricanes. Not quite as much fun, I am afraid.

Miami Thumps Virginia
November 7, 2009
At Land Shark Stadium on Saturday, the Cavaliers' defense and two blocked punts kept them in the game for a little while, but a punt return for a touchdown, 515 yards of total offense and a run of 28 second-half points helped Miami trample the Hoos 52-17. Now 3-6, Virginia returns home next week against Boston College.

Wanted ASAP: Football Fun
November 7, 2009
What do you say when there's nothing left to say? Unimaginative and inept offense. Average at best defense that misses tackles and looks worse as it gets worn down. Inconsistent, can't block, teetering on the brink of disaster special teams. Al Groh, Beta Bridge, last straws, and all that? No need to belabor that point. It's all over but the announcement.
So what can I say? Not much I'm afraid. I know one thing, though. This sure isn't fun anymore.

Game Preview 2009 - Miami
November 5, 2009
The last time the Cavaliers played Miami in Florida, Virginia handed the Hurricanes one of the most embarrassing losses in program history - maybe the most embarrassing ever; UVa delivered a 48-0 romp in the final game in the historic Orange Bowl on that trip. But apart from that 48-point shutout in 2007, the Hoos and Canes have played four tight contests in the last five years with no team winning by more than 10 points. Virginia can pull an upset on the road, but it will take an enormous effort to do so against one of the ACC's most talented teams.

Greg's Stock Report '09: Duke
November 4, 2009
For the second consecutive year a decent outing by the Virginia defense kept the Hoos in a game against Duke but another woeful performance by the offense ensured another Cavalier defeat. As the small crowd of long-suffering Duke fans hugged and exchanged high-fives in the stands, the Virginia football team muddled into the locker room Saturday evening to contemplate another miserable loss and begin what figures to be another difficult month in a season that finds UVa on the brink of a third losing campaign in four years.

Press Conference Notes '09 - Miami
November 3, 2009
A second consecutive loss - both this season and to Duke - bring the Cavaliers to 3-5 with some of the most difficult teams on their schedule still to come. The offense netted 196 yards, the fourth total of 201 yards or fewer this season. In back-to-back weeks, the Cavalier defense has had trouble stopping both a running team and a passing team. Special teams have been shaky at best all season, and continue to be in flux personnel-wise.
As Virginia heads to Miami this Saturday, what better time than now to recall the Cavaliers' 48-0 throttling of the Hurricanes in the final game of the Orange Bowl two seasons ago?
