Hermitage Notes: A Look At RB Derrick Green

Derrick Green recalls entering Hermitage High School (Richmond, VA) weighing 268 pounds. Realizing he couldn't do what he wanted - play running back - unless he trimmed down, Green worked hard and is now 215 pounds heading into his junior season. 2013 Profile: QB Bucky Hodges

Bucky Hodges admittedly was a bit surprised when he got the nod as Salem's (Virginia Beach, VA) starting quarterback with four games left in his freshman season.
"My first game [as a starter] was Homecoming," Hodges recalled. "I was real nervous. The coaches kept saying they were going to play me, but I didn't know they were going to throw me in the Homecoming game. From there I got better each game."

Liberty (Bealeton, VA) rising junior Wyatt Teller is set to start on both sides of the line this season, at left offensive tackle and defensive tackle. Measuring in at 6'5", 253 pounds and boasting a wing span around 6'7" or 6'8", Teller has caught the attention of major FBS coaches despite not attending any camps this summer. Strategy Session: Line Recruiting Going Well

The offensive and defensive lines have been a focus in Mike London's first two full recruiting classes as Virginia's head coach. Ten players, including six incoming freshmen this season and four 2012 class recruits, are designated to play on the defensive line, which of course now features four starters as compared to Al Groh's three-man front. Getting the numbers right in terms of defensive line depth has been one of the key recruiting objectives in London's first two classes, and the staff certainly appears to be getting the job done in that department. Broughton High School (Raleigh, N.C.) began preseason practice recently, and rising senior running back Chris Mangus is anxious to build off of last season's successes. The 5'11", 175-pound prospect totaled approximately 1,600 yards of offense, including over 1,300 yards rushing, in head coach Chris Martin's spread offense. Combining a good work ethic with speed and quickness, Mangus continues to progress on the high school level.

Today, on the day of his late mother's birthday, Eli Harold announced that he would attend the University of Virginia. The 6'4", 220-pound defensive end prospect spent a good amount of the press conference remembering his mother, who may have passed but continues to inspire.
"I want to keep my head up, keep moving forward, and never give up," Harold said. "That's why I chose to do this on this day, August 2nd. She would've been 57 years old."

Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA) rising senior Anthony Cooper, one of the University of Virginia's most recent commitments, kept it simple at his July 20 press conference.
"I just thanked everybody," Cooper recalled. "I thanked all the schools that had given me a scholarship offer. Then I said where I was going."
The decision itself, Cooper says, wasn't as simple. Many observers pegged the 6'0", 180-pound wide receiver/safety as UVa-bound, but the final decision only became clear hours before the announcement.

Jamall Brown Scored The Offer He Wanted

A dislocated wrist did not end Jamall Brown's junior season entirely. The Hampton High School (Hampton, VA) product, who suffered the injury in the second game of the regular season, still managed to play safety for the Crabbers despite the injury. He was, however, sidelined from playing wide receiver, the position he likely would play on the college level. Without a junior season to showcase his talents on the offensive side of the ball, this summer's camp circuit became all the more important in impressing college coaches.
