Boston College High (Boston, MA) has had its 2012 season affected largely by injuries. In one game, the Eagles played without 10 projected preseason starters. University of Virginia-bound senior offensive lineman Jack McDonald is happy to report that his team is finally healthy and ready to make a push for the postseason.
This edition of Sabre Scoop (formerly Recruiting News, Notes, and Links) provides the latest on uncommitted 7'0" senior Joel Embiid, who will be in Charlottesville on an official visit this weekend. On the football front, a Richmond (VA) area prospect is performing at a high level and looking like a possible diamond in the rough for the Cavaliers.
Offensive line prospect Coleman Thomas was offered a scholarship by West Virginia University one day after attending a Mountaineers camp this past summer. In-state ACC schools Virginia and Virginia Tech offered more recently, and the Fort Chiswell (VA) junior believes two others could be on the verge as well.
In this "Strategy Session," I take a look at the few primary remaining targets the Virginia coaches are eyeing and take a look ahead to the class of 2014, which features some prominent in-state targets that are already on the national recruiting radar.
The 2012 Fork Union Military Academy (VA) postgraduate football program features two players -- defensive tackle/offensive lineman Tyrell Chavis and tight end/defensive end Max Valles -- from the University of Virginia's 2012 recruiting class. I caught up with longtime FUMA postgrad coach John Shuman for the latest on these two, on and off the field.
In-state junior wide receivers Donovan Dowling and B.J. Farrow both seem likely to land scholarship levels on some level. The hard-fought contest needed an overtime period to be decided, and the Falcons came out on top with a 20-19 win.

Chancellor (Fredericksburg, VA) offensive tackle Steven Moss entered his junior season having already sold 13 college football programs on his talents. The 6'5", 275-pound prospect boasts 13 scholarship offers, including Boston College, Clemson, East Carolina, Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina, N.C. State, Old Dominion, South Carolina, Syracuse, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia.
Yesterday was an exciting day for the University of Virginia football program and its fans, and for good reason. Known for his quickness, acceleration, and elusiveness, Smoke Mizzell impacts the game as a runner and as a receiver. The 5'10", 190-pound tailback showed off his overall game this spring and summer, standing out at prominent camps and combines including the Richmond VTO, the Nike Camp in Baltimore, and Nike's The Opening and Gridiron Kings events.
Varina (VA) product and University of Virginia commitment Tim Harris enters the 2012 season as one of the most highly regarded defensive backs in the class of 2013. All four national recruiting sites rank him as a 4-star prospect.
Penn State football's class of 2013 has taken a hit as a result of the heavy sanctions the NCAA recently laid down on the program. UVa recruiting was impacted today, when former Nittany Lions recruit Zach Bradshaw, a 6'3", 200-pound outside linebacker/wide receiver out of Damascus (MD), pledged to the Hoos.
Troy Reeder had never been to the University of Virginia before last weekend, but his first trip to Charlottesville was a successful one. The 6'2", 226-pound rising junior linebacker impressed head coach Mike London and company with his performance during the Cavaliers' one-day camp on July 21. Days later, he received a scholarship offer from the Hoos.
