In this latest "News, Notes & Links" feature, I catch up with rising senior offensive tackle Sadiq Olanrewaju to talk about his latest experience at UVa. Also, running back Taquan Mizzell firms up his decision date, and Virginia men's basketball is set to host a potential transfer next week.
The University of Virginia's July 21 camp came to an end around 1:30 in the afternoon. At that time, safety prospect Malcolm Cook, fresh off an impressive camp performance, didn't plan on giving head coach Mike London a verbal commitment. Three hours later, the Richmond (VA) native changed his mind and is now the 16th member of Virginia's class of 2013.
The University of Virginia football program held its final one-day camp of 2012 today. In this "News And Notes" feature, I write about a new name (at least to fans) on the class of 2013 recruiting radar, a very promising rising junior linebacker who appears set to land a Virginia offer as a result of his performance today, UVa class of 2013 recruit Sadiq Olanrewaju, and more.
6'2", 305-pound Derrick Nnadi was in Blacksburg on July 14 for Virginia Tech's one-day camp. There, the Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, VA) rising junior defensive tackle showed why he has received scholarship offers from Illinois, N.C. State, Old Dominion, Virginia and Virginia Tech.
Tailback Taquan Mizzell revealed his five finalists earlier this week. Now, a decision date is in place for the Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA) 4-star rising senior.
"August 21 is the date," Marlins head coach Darnell Moore told TheSabre.com.
Asked for the latest on his recruitment, Mountain View (Stafford, VA) rising senior DaeSean Hamilton said: "I haven't traveled anywhere [this summer]. I've been keeping in touch with coaches, planning visits with them, and learning more and more about schools that have offered me."
Only 16 years old, Jon Baker measures in at 6'3", 300 pounds, and he has been a mainstay on the Millis-Hopedale Mohawks' (Millis, MA) varsity offensive line the past two seasons. Baker, a rising junior, has only been playing football for three years.
TheSabre.com's Preseason In-State Top 40 for the class of 2013 is here. This group is deep at the top, with 12 players currently ranked in the 4-star category. The top 10 includes a good mix of offensive and defensive prospects, including three quarterbacks, three linebackers, two running backs and two defensive ends. Topping the list is Stone Bridge (Ashburn, VA) defensive end Jonathan Allen, a nationally pursued player who committed to Alabama this spring.
Jack McDonald's first impression of the University of Virginia was a positive one, thanks in large part to primary recruiter Jim Reid.
"Jim Reid, I've known him for a while. He was the first one I met from Virginia," said McDonald, an offensive lineman out of Boston College High (Boston, MA). He is one of 15 rising high school seniors to commit to UVa.
Class of 2013 football recruiting news has come fast and furious in the month of June. UVa certainly has been in on the action, landing six rising high school seniors in the past two weeks. The Cavaliers have 15 commitments overall now, and spots are limited. Lake Taylor (Norfolk, VA) rising junior Jamil Kamara hit the recruiting trail last Friday, when he took an unofficial visit to the University of Virginia. The 6'2", 190-pound wide receiver discussed his visit to Charlottesville and revealed where he may head next in this latest update.
UVa football's impressive recruiting roll continues. Today, Good Counsel (Olney, MD) cornerback Kirk Garner verbally committed to the Hoos over offers from Boston College, Cincinnati, Florida State, Maryland, Michigan State, Nebraska, Penn State, Purdue, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and West Virginia, among others.
Potomac (Dumfries, VA) rising senior Donta Wilkins has verbally committed to the University of Virginia, giving the Hoos an all-state prospect at a big position of need. Multiple outlets are reporting the commitment.
In this latest News, Notes, And Links, Liberty Christian Academy (Lynchburg, VA) head coach Frank Rocco provides the scoop on rising junior wide receiver B.J. Farrow, who impressed at UVa's 7-on-7 tournament this past weekend. University of Virginia has landed a verbal commitment from St. Christopher's (Richmond, VA) rising senior defensive tackle/tight end Jack English. It was an easy decision for English, who chose the Hoos over an offer from Virginia Tech one day after receiving a scholarship offer from head coach Mike London.
In just two years of high school, Woodbridge (VA) defensive end prospect Da'Shawn Hand has accomplished quite a bit.
