The Virginia men's basketball team opened ACC play with a 61-52 victory against North Carolina on Sunday. Six different Cavaliers scored at least 6 points in the win, while the team's defense held UNC to just 37.3% shooting on the night. There were some other key details in the win, however, and Sabre Editor Kris Wright takes a closer look in a new EDGE feature called the "Double Bonus."

UVa Secures Win Over UNC

The opening moments of the second half at the John Paul Jones Arena didn't live up to the halftime discussion for the Virginia men's basketball team. So UVa coach Tony Bennett took a reminder timeout to dig into his players in their ACC opener against North Carolina. The obviously more composed Hoos ripped off a 17-7 run after that break and they did not have another turnover the rest of the way en route to a 61-52 victory.

Is UVa's Pack-Line Ready For ACC Play?

The Virginia men's basketball team wrapped up non-conference play with a 74-39 win against Wofford, marking the third time in five games that the opponent failed to reach 40 points. Entering ACC play, UVa ranks in the top 25 nationally in scoring defense and field goal percentage defense while placing in the top 50 in 3-point field goal percentage defense. Wahoos Whip Wofford

In the early moments of Virginia's game with Wofford on Sunday, some of the post-exam issues with turnovers and defensive lapses that appeared against Morgan State and Old Dominion seemed set to haunt the Cavaliers again in their final non-conference game of the season. Over the last 25 minutes, however, those problems mostly vanished and the Hoos dominated both ends of the floor en route to a 74-39 victory.

It remains to be seen how this year's Virginia men's basketball team will fare in ACC play. If it goes anything like the CAA portion of the schedule, however, it's going to be a long year for the Hoos. On Saturday, UVa dropped its third game of the season and fell to 0-3 against CAA competition as Old Dominion took down the Cavaliers, 63-61, at the Governor's Holiday Hoops Classic in Richmond.

Hoos Brush Off Bears, Exam Rust

The first game after exams each December at Virginia almost always seems to be a slightly off-kilter affair for the Cavaliers. Wednesday night's match-up with Morgan State proved no different. Despite a fairly comfortable 18-point win, 75-57, UVa spent much of the night trying to find the pre-break rhythm that led to seven straight victories.

Mitchell, Hoos Dunk Delta Devils

Akil Mitchell led all scorers with 20 points as Virginia defeated Mississippi Valley State 67-39 on Saturday, The Hoos' seventh straight win on the season. The Cavaliers used size and quickness to easily dispatch the Delta Devils before a crowd of just more than 8,000 at John Paul Jones Arena. Justin Anderson and Darion Atkins joined Mitchell in double figures in the win.

Cavs Defeat Vols in Defensive Struggle

The Virginia offense sputtered down the stretch, but a sterling defensive performance helped the men's basketball team take care of Tennessee anyway on Wednesday night. The Cavaliers burst out to a 15-point lead midway through the first half and the lead never dropped to a one-possession score again as the Hoos prevailed 46-38. UVa has won six straight games to improve to 7-2 on the season.

When you open up the record book for Virginia Basketball you might not see former Cavalier great Jim Miller's name listed too many times. But make no mistake, "Jimmy" Miller is one of the most beloved Cavalier athletes of all time and one of the best to ever wear the Virginia uniform. During Miller's career, UVa won 97 games and in his first three years helped Virginia to the Sweet 16, Elite 8 and Final Four. Miller is the latest focus of The Sabre Interview.

Hoos Snare Win Over Green Bay

The Virginia men's basketball team made it a Wisconsin sweep this week. Just three days after taking down Wisconsin on Wednesday in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, the Cavaliers returned to Charlottesville and knocked off Wisconsin Green Bay on Saturday, 67-51. UVa has won five straight games to improve to 6-2 on the season.

Al Groh once told me that the writer the players hated most was the game grade guy. Lucky me! That likely will continue again this week since the news and the grades are not very good - especially for the offense. In what is becoming a habitual "offense" (pun intended), Virginia's defense does what it needs to do to win, special teams remained average while continuing to allow sudden change plays, and the offense simply can't get the job done.

Cavaliers Bounce Badgers

In coach Bo Ryan's tenure, the Wisconsin men's basketball program had posted an 85-6 record in home games against non-conference teams entering this season's ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Make that 85-7. On Wednesday night, Virginia waltzed into the Kohl Center and picked up a 60-54 win. The Cavaliers have won four straight games this season and four straight times in this event.
