Virginia Soccer Off To Strong Start
October 9, 2008
When Virginia men's soccer coach George Gelnovatch says this year's team is young, he isn't exaggerating for effect. No, not at all. Gelnovatch is starting five freshmen for the first time since ... well, ever. And until Chris Agorsor tore his ACL recently, the Cavaliers were starting six freshmen. With that information alone, one might wonder if Virginia's typical success will be threatened this year. But according to Gelnovatch, what the Cavaliers (6-3-0, 3-0-0 ACC) lack in experience, they make up for in talent.

Gelnovatch Proud of Team's Season
December 18, 2006
The Virginia men's soccer team has much to be proud of when looking back at the 2006 season. The Cavaliers finished with a 17-4-1 overall record (5-3 ACC) and returned to the College Cup for the first time since 1997. UVa coach George Gelnovatch recognizes the achievements of his squad, but now he must find a way to retool the team - which loses three senior starters and at least two underclassmen - for 2007.

UVa Looks For Second Win Over UCLA
November 30, 2006
Virginia will be facing a familiar foe on Friday night in St. Louis when it battles UCLA in the semifinal round of the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament. Just less than three months ago, the Cavaliers hosted the Bruins at Klockner Stadium and emerged with a 1-0 victory on a goal scored by sophomore forward Yannick Reyering in the game's 88th minute. Reyering, however, acknowledges that beating a team a second time is not always easy.

When the Virginia women's soccer team opens play today with its first ever meeting against Syracuse, it will be akin to firing a gun that doesn't have all the bullets. 2005 Preview: Young Cavs Going for ACC Three-peat
September 2, 2005
Of the 28 players on the Virginia men's soccer roster, exactly two are seniors. Yes, it's another young team for George Gelnovatch, but by now he's used to it. In his 10th year as UVa's head coach, Gelnovatch has watched many of his top players turn pro before reaching their senior year. The difference is he's starting to find greater success despite the turnover.
With similarly youthful squads, Gelnovatch has led the Cavaliers to consecutive ACC championships. He believes this team could make it three in a row, as well as contend for a national title, regardless of its inexperience.

With 33 players on his 2004 roster, including 11 returning starters, UVa men's soccer coach George Gelnovatch thinks he might have all the ingredients in place for a championship recipe.
He has a dash of experience, a pinch of talent - make that two or three pinches - and a generous helping of team chemistry. So what is the final ingredient? Simple - finding the perfect lineup. Of course, that's the hard part for Gelnovatch and the Cavaliers, who open a season of high expectations tonight at Klockner Stadium.

2003 Men's Soccer: A Difficult Path, but the Same Destination
November 21, 2003
Entering the ACC Tournament with a losing record did not sit well with Virginia men’s soccer coach George Gelnovatch. Knowing that his team was in danger of missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 23 years, Gelnovatch knew the Cavaliers needed to play great defense and have a few breaks go the Cavaliers way.
Gelnovatch’s squad did just that.
The UVa defense allowed just one total goal in its three ACC Tournament matches, and the Cavaliers won a pair of matches in the penalty kick phase to edge Clemson and Maryland. With the second penalty kick win, over the Terrapins, Virginia was awarded the ACC Tournament title and was automatically given the league’s NCAA Tournament postseason berth.

Great Expectations: UVa Soccer Preview
August 19, 2002
If you were to poll most Division I college coaches from around the country on the definition of a successful season, reaching an NCAA tournament while trampling the competition in an undefeated conference season would ultimately rate as quite successful for most programs. Not for head coach George Gelnovatch and the Virginia men's soccer team.
Last fall, Gelnovatch's dominant Cavalier squad became the first ever squad to sweep its conference foes without allowing a single goal in conference play. The likes of North Carolina and Clemson were simply no match for Virginia in September and October, but in November, something happened to the Cavaliers that happens to so many teams throughout the athletic year: they ran into a roadblock.
