Diamonte Bailey
Defensive End LOI Status: SIGNED |
Notes - Diamonte "Diamond" Bailey started for the last two seasons on the Hermitage varsity squad. In 2010, he earned first-team all-district, first-team all-region and second-team all-metro honors, helping the Panthers to an undefeated regular season, a region championship, and an appearance in the Group AAA, Division 6 state title game. Also had an offer from Marshall.
Quotes - "He had an excellent [senior] season. He played our strong-side end position, so he was primarily responsible for two things. He of course would rush the passer, but in running situations he would have to be firm with the tight end and hold his ground in the C gap." - Hermitage head coach Patrick Kane said.
"He has to have a little bit more physical maturity in terms of development in the weight room," Kane said. "In a speed rusher, that's hard to find coming out of high school. I have no idea what the depth is at that position right now, but if they are in need of a rusher now he may have to step in. I'm a big fan of the red-shirt, though."

Thompson Brown
Defensive End LOI Status: SIGNED |
Notes - Brown missed most of his junior season due to injury but returned for a strong senior season. He started at tight end and defensive end in 2010, amassing 21 receptions and four touchdowns and 93 tackles including nine sacks. He earned VIS Division 1 first-team all-state and Richmond Times-Dispatch first-team all-metro honors at defensive end. An excellent athlete, Brown has been timed in the 40 in 4.59 seconds. Also had offers from Boston College and Duke, among others.
Quotes - "Thompson is a machine. He is relentless in the weight room and has been for years. The accumulation of all that hard work along with some truly impressive natural gifts is beginning to really bear fruit. He has HUGE upside at the college level. He's got the kind of physical frame and lightning quick first step that are the hallmark of great pass rushers. Furthermore he loves the game. I'm excited to see what he can do once he's had a chance to learn Coach Reid's defensive system." - St. Christopher's head coach Michael Turner.

Ross Burbank
Offensive Line LOI Status: SIGNED |
Notes - Burbank, an offensive guard, anchored the Cox offensive line for three seasons. He earned first-team all-Tidewater honors for his play in 2010. He also started at defensive tackle and played well, tallying over 30 tackles in each of the past two seasons. Burbank even got a turn at running back in 2010, rushing for touchdowns as Cox finished with a 6-5 record that included a playoff berth.
Quotes - "You can see when you watch the film that he ragdolls guys around and uses his brute strength to handle business on the offensive line." - Cox head coach Bill Stachelski.

Rob Burns
Defensive End LOI Status: SIGNED |
Notes - A 6'7", 230-pound frame combined with good athletic ability could equate to a number of positions at UVa, but for now Rob Burns is being recruited to play defensive end. Burns reminds me a little bit of current Cavaliers defensive tackle Matt Conrath, though I don't see Burns playing d-tackle at Virginia. He comes from one of the state's top high school football programs in Stone Bridge, which is guided by former Virginia football player Mickey Thompson. Also had offers from Boston College, Duke, Maryland, Penn State, Rutgers, Stanford, Syracuse and Wake Forest.
Quotes - "He had a great year. We had a lot of holes. Wherever we had a problem, we moved him around and he took care of the problem. We struggled at tight end, so he played a lot of offense. He played the 3-technique at defensive tackle. He played defensive end." - Mickey Thompson said of Burns' 2010 season.

Vincent Croce
Defensive End LOI Status: SIGNED |
Notes - A tough, smart, physical player, Croce quarterbacked the Good Counsel defense each of the past two seasons from the middle linebacker spot. The Washington Post All-Metro Defensive Player of the Year in 2010, Croce led the Falcons in tackles, helping the team to a second consecutive WCAC championship title. His size likely means he'll play on the defensive line, though he is an underrated athlete and it wouldn't be a surprise if he got a look at linebacker. Tight end, where he started as well in high school, could be a possibility as well. Also had offers from Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, North Carolina, Rutgers, Stanford, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
Quotes - "That kid is a stud. He's versatile. He is a defensive end/linebacker type of kid. He is a ball player. I was really impressed with him. He'll get bigger, but he's already about 240. I think he'll be a hell of a defensive end." - ," said Phoebus head coach Stan Sexton, who was an assistant on the South squad in the 2010 Chesapeake Bowl. Croce saw action at linebacker and d-end in the all-star game.

Tim Cwalina
Offensive Tackle LOI Status: SIGNED |
Notes - Cwalina (pronounced Kwa-leena) has great size and he helped pave the way for a potent Mount Lebanon offensive attack. He started at left tackle and defensive tackle his senior season, earning second-team all-state and first-team all-conference honors on offense. As a junior, he earned first-team all-conference honors on offense. He played two seasons on the varsity level. Also had offers from Boston College, Louisville, Pittsburgh and Wisconsin.
Quotes - "Tim had an outstanding [2010 season] for us. He was a big part of our success. He played both offensive line and defensive line for us for the first time in his career. He did very well on both sides. He was a leader on the offensive line." - Mount Lebanon head coach Chris Haering.
"The most exciting thing about Tim is that I don't think he has topped out as a player," Haering said. "He is one of those guys who is probably a little bit of a late bloomer. He didn't play much as a sophomore. What I would say sums him up best is that everyday he goes to work and tries to get better. He's a great practice player. He works on his development. He does a great job in the weight room."

David Dean
Defensive Tackle LOI Status: SIGNED |
Notes - David Dean was a key contributor on both sides of the ball in his 4-year Green Run varsity career, but he projects as a defensive tackle at Virginia. He started at offensive guard and in 2010 paved the way for one of the top rushers in the state in Dre-Quez Green. Defensively, he had 65 tackles with 11 sacks his senior year, earning first-team all-Tidewater honors. He was a first-team all-Tidewater selection as a junior at offensive guard. He was a first-team all-Beach district selection each of the last two seasons. Also had offers from Duke, Louisville and West Virginia.
Quotes - "If you watch film of him against the guys we play, you see a lot of his tackles are running down the line of scrimmage and chasing down plays on the opposite side. When teams ran right at him, he stopped the play the majority of the time. He couldn't be blocked one on one." - Stallions head coach Shawn Wilson on Dean's senior season.
"He's a tough kid. I'll tell you that," Wilson said of Dean's prospects of playing as a true freshman. "If he is not playing next season, he'll give the starters a heck of a time on the scout team. I think he's going to have an excellent four, five years at UVa."

Adrian Gamble
Wide Receiver LOI Status: SIGNED |
Notes - Gamble, who only had two years of varsity level experience, is a raw talent, but he has the physical tools college coaches covet in a wide receiver prospect. He has excellent speed (has run the 100 meters in 10.5 seconds) and a 37-inch vertical leap. He reeled in just under 1,000 yards of receiving as a junior, which was his first year on the varsity level. Gamble showed off his big-play ability again in 2010, reeling in touchdown receptions of 59 and 60 yards.
Quotes - "When I get the ball, I'm most dangerous because of my speed. My route running is pretty good." - Gamble.

Kevin Green
Athlete LOI Status: SIGNED |
Notes - Petersburg's field general over the course of his junior and senior seasons, Green should get a look at quarterback at Virginia. He had 1,507 yards passing and 752 yards rushing his senior year, accounting for 22 total touchdowns in helping the Crimson Wave to a second consecutive playoff appearance. If quarterback doesn't work out, though, he has the athletic ability and toughness to play defense, perhaps at safety or linebacker. His father, Kevin Morgan, played fullback at UVa in the '80s. Green also is a standout player for a successful Petersburg varsity basketball squad that made the Group AAA state championship in 2010.
Quotes - "Kevin Green is a winner. The kid has a heart of a champion. He is tough. He beat us the last game of the year. We couldn't tackle him. He is bigger and stronger than he looks on film. I'm glad he is staying in state to play college football." - Meadowbrook head coach Troy Taylor, whose team fell to Petersburg 23-22 in the final game of the 2010 regular season. The win put Petersburg into the playoffs.

Anthony Harris
Athlete LOI Status: SIGNED |
Notes - A 3-year starter on the varsity level, Harris didn't play football at all his freshman year. He started at quarterback and cornerback for the Skyhawks in each of the past two seasons, compiling a 21-1 overall record as starting signal caller. He'll start out at safety at Virginia. Harris totaled 1800 yards and 27 touchdowns his junior season and had 21 total touchdowns as a senior. Defensively, he earned first-team all-state honors as a junior and had five interceptions to go along with 31 tackles and six tackles for loss his senior year. Also had offers from Connecticut, Louisville, Maryland, Richmond and West Virginia.
Quotes - "It's good when your best football player is also your hardest worker on and off the field. The athleticism is there, but his leadership, work ethic and all those other cliches come into play with him. Also, he is a player you can truly tell one thing to him on Monday and he'll know it on Friday. You only have to tell him once." - Skyhawks head coach David Bedwell.

D.J. Hill
Linebacker LOI Status: SIGNED |
Notes - In a 3-year span on the varsity level, Hill tallied 220 tackles and had 10 interceptions, returning six of those interceptions for scores. He saw action at running back, linebacker and safety over the course of his high school career. On offense, he rushed for 561 yards and 10 scores his junior year. As a senior, he averaged 6.5 yards per carry. Also had offers from Middle Tennessee, Mississippi, and Vanderbilt.
Quotes - "Defensively, D.J. does a great job of helping us get in the right defense. He is our team leader out there. One of his responsibilities is getting us in the right fronts and he has done an excellent job. We always talk about him being a coach on the field. He is prepared week in and week out. His athletic ability is his biggest selling point. He is almost 6-2, 220 pounds, and he runs a 4.5 in the 40. He moves very well. He makes open-field tackles and is awesome against the passing game. He has intercepted double-digit passes in his career and has been able to return six or seven of those for touchdowns. And in big ball-games, he definitely shows up. He'll be a tough kid to replace next year." - Newton head coach Cortez Allen.
"D.J. is a tremendous kid. He has meant a whole lot to our program. The last four years has been a big turnaround for the program. The school hasn't had a whole lot of success, but D.J. and other kids in the class have done a great job of heading in the right direction. D.J. has been outstanding and I think he will do well in college. He is extremely coachable. He works hard. He has a great support system at home to help him." - Coach Allen.

Darius Jennings
Athlete LOI Status: SIGNED |
Notes - An Under Armour All-American. 2010 Gatorade Player of the Year in Maryland. A big-time playmaker with big-play speed, Jennings totaled 2,017 yards of offense including 1,592 yards rushing on 165 carries in his senior season. He had 24 touchdowns (14 rushing, three passing and two kick-off returns). For his career, he had 4,338 yards rushing and 53 total touchdowns. Jennings played quarterback on the high school level but is an "offensive athlete," meaning he can be utilized in a variety of different ways. Look for him to primarily play slot receiver, but he can also line up at quarterback in a Wildcat formation, line up at running back and run jet-sweeps. Jennings also has home-run potential in the return game.
Quotes - "You see him without equipment and you think this kid can't play. But he puts on his equipment and straps on his helmet and he is a player. He is the first kid I've seen that runs by you and you feel a breeze. That's how fast he is out there." - Phoebus head coach Stan Sexton said of Jennings. Both were on the South team at the 2010 Chesapeake Bowl.
"I'm amazed at what Jennings is able to do. We've played him two years in a row and 'held' him to about 550 yards rushing. There's nothing you can do to stop him, and we worked very hard to try and find a way." - Statement from DeMatha Coach Bill McGregor.

Kelby Johnson
Offensive Line LOI Status: SIGNED |
Notes - Started as a senior at right offensive tackle for one of the nation's top high school football programs. In what is not an uncommon occurrence at DeMatha, Johnson did not start until his senior season, but saw significant playing time his junior year. Played on the varsity basketball squad for the first two years of his high school career before dedicating himself fully to football.
Quotes - "I just think he has unlimited upside. He came to DeMatha to play basketball, but he made the football varsity as a freshman and he made the varsity as a sophomore. He decided his junior year to concentrate on football. I think he has unbelievable potential." - DeMatha head coach Bill McGregor.

Marco Jones
Defensive End LOI Status: SIGNED |
Notes - Started at offensive tackle and defensive end in each of the past two seasons. Sat out his sophomore year because of transfer rules (he transferred from Mount St. Joseph's). As a junior, Jones totaled 70 tackles with four sacks on defense, the side of the ball he will play on at Virginia. Played most of his senior year with a thumb injury that would require postseason surgery, but he's expected to be fine. Also had offers from Connecticut, Duke, Kansas State, Louisville, Maryland, Penn State, Rutgers, Stanford and West Virginia.
Quotes - "I think he trained very hard for this season. He was noticeably bigger and stronger this year. After our loss to St. Anne's-Belfield (which moved the team to 5-1 on the year), I think Marco and all of our other players realized that they had to be more accountable. Marco really stepped it up on offense from then on. He really played well on offense." - Boys' Latin head coach Ritchie Schell of Jones' senior season.
On defense, "You don't see it in his stats, but Marco had a great season," Schell said. "Teams refused to run to his side. I could game-plan that way, because I knew what the other team would do."

Kyrrel Latimer
Safety LOI Status: SIGNED |
Notes - Latimer saw action at free and strong safety on Fork Union's postgraduate squad this past season. He earned a starting role and played well, reeling in four interceptions on the season. Latimer was a standout safety at DeMatha Catholic before heading to FUMA.
Quotes - "He's a heady guy. He'll learn their defense. He needs to get a little stronger in the upper body, but we're working on that right now. He had a knee injury out of high school, so we're trying to get that cleaned up and strong. By August, he'll be competing right away. He is a good talent and he has a good head for the game." - FUMA postgraduate head coach John Shuman.

Darius Lee
Linebacker LOI Status: SIGNED |
Notes - First-team VIS Division 1 all-state selection in 2010. As a junior, he totaled, 74 tackles including 15 tackles for loss. Saw action at linebacker, safety and wide receiver. A versatile and athletic player, he could end up at safety or linebacker at UVa. Participated in the Chesapeake Bowl. Also had offers from Duke and Kansas State.
Quotes - "They told me that, since I can run with wide receivers, they know I can run with running backs. They think I could drop down to safety too and cover some slot receivers." - Lee, stating what the Virginia coaches told him last summer about his potential role on defense.
"I thought he definitely was an athletic guy and a good football player. I was pretty impressed. He's a good player." - fellow Virginia recruit Thompson Brown, whose St. Christopher's team defeated St. Stephen's/St. Agnes in the 2010 season.
"His ability to change directions, adjust to the ball in mid-air, and come down hill to make plays were all thoroughly impressive." - St. Christopher's head coach Michael Turner.

Kameron Mack
Safety LOI Status: SIGNED |
Notes - A first-team all-Tidewater selection in 2010. Mack started at free safety and played wide receiver for head coach Larry Archie, whose team captured a share of the Eastern District title in 2010. Mack totaled around 30 tackles on the season. He started at free safety for four years on the varsity level. Mack was a starter on the 2009/2010 Norcom varsity basketball squad that captured a Group AAA championship. Ironically, his team defeated Kevin Green and the Petersburg Crimson Wave in the state final. Also had an offer from Virginia Tech.
Quotes - "His range is real good. In high school, our district is more or less a run district, so we were able to push him closer to the ball. He almost has some experience at linebacker because of that. He can cover backs out of the backfield. He's a great athlete. And he has a real high football IQ. He's a long strider, so it doesn't look like he is moving as fast as he is. And he's physical. He was very physical [in 2010]. He's impressive in his uniform." - Norcom head coach Larry Archie.
"I think he'll start off at free safety [at Virginia]. I think he can be as good as they want him to be. He'll not be outworked. He works hard. As he grows, maybe he grow to linebacker, defensive end or tight end. I think the possibilities are limitless. Honestly, I think he is 6-6 now. It's just a matter of where he fits down the road." - Archie on Mack's potential position at UVa.

Demetrious Nicholson
Cornerback LOI Status: SIGNED |
Notes - 2010 Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Virginia. 2011 Under Armour All-American. 2010 All-Tidewater Player of the Year. Nicholson is a big-time player who quite simply made plays no matter where he lined up on the field. He started five games as a freshman at cornerback, the position he will play at Virginia. A player with terrific speed (4.43 40), Nicholson is known as a shut-down corner. He started at cornerback and receiver each of the past two seasons. As a senior, Nicholson had three interceptions and returned a fumble 95 yards for a touchdown. He picked off eight passes as a junior. He returned two punts for scores and had 38 receptions for 597 yards and eight touchdowns. Nicholson, who goes by "Trey," helped the Marlins to an undefeated regular season, a district title and a region championship in 2010. Also had offers from Clemson, Michigan, North Carolina, N.C. State, Stanford, Virginia Tech, and more.
Quotes - "I think a lot depends on his strength. People wouldn't know from looking at him, but he is strong. The kid is benching 270 pounds. He'll bench over 300 by the time he gets to Virginia. I think he'll have the opportunity to play as a freshman." -- Bayside head coach Darnell Moore on Nicholson's potential to play as a true freshman.

Brandon Phelps
Cornerback LOI Status: SIGNED |
Notes - A standout wide receiver and cornerback on the high school level, Phelps played four years on the varsity level. He missed a good portion of his senior year due to a hip flexor injury, but returned to help his team's playoff run. Phelps has potential on either side of the ball but projects as a cornerback, where he has shut-down potential. At receiver, he hauled in 38 receptions for 473 yards and six touchdowns his junior year. His father, Gary, played football at UVa. His mother attended UVa as well. Also had offers from Alabama, LSU, Ohio State, Penn State, Virginia Tech and many more.
Quotes - "My ball skills. Me being a receiver, I'm good at locating the ball. I put myself in position to be the one coming down with the ball." -- Phelps on what separates him from other cornerback prospects.

Clifton Richardson
Running Back LOI Status: SIGNED |
Notes - A truly versatile player, Richardson, who goes by the nickname of "Doodie," saw action at quarterback, tailback, fullback, wide receiver, free safety and punt and kick returner on the high school level. Has great hands and receiving skills, which gives him added versatility as a running back. Richardson had over 1,000 all-purpose yards his senior season. As a sophomore in 2008, he rushed for 643 yards and passed for 222 yards. As a junior, Richardson rushed for 1,268 yards and scored 11 touchdowns. He added 118 yards receiving on the season. Also had offers from Maryland, Miami, South Carolina, Virginia Tech and West Virginia, among others.
Quotes - "I've seen a lot of growth in his running ability over the course of the last couple of years. His vision has improved. Elusiveness is certainly one of his key attributes, but he is turning into a power runner. We also use him as a wide receiver, something Virginia has also mentioned doing. I think they call it H-back there. He'd be a guy who could line up in spread formations as a slot guy or in the I-formation as a tailback." - former Menchville head coach John Byron said prior to Richardson's senior season.

Daquan Romero
Linebacker LOI Status: Signed (2010 class) |
Notes - Enrolled at Virginia in January of 2011. Two-time Peninsula District Defensive Player of the Year. Romero, who primarily played defensive end and tight end throughout high school, had 30 sacks his junior season and 19 sacks his senior season. He'll make the transition from defensive end to linebacker at Virginia. He helped the Phantoms to three consecutive state championships from 2008-2010. Also had offers from Maryland, North Carolina and West Virginia.
Quotes - "He's smart. He watches a lot of tape. By the third or fourth offensive series, he has an idea of what the opponent is doing. He's going to be a great coach one day. He picks up on things extremely quick. He gets guys in the right position. He has a sense for things that are going to happen. He picks up on snap counts. It's amazing, his knowledge for the game." - Phoebus head coach Stan Sexton.

Caleb Taylor
Linebacker LOI Status: SIGNED |
Notes - Taylor had a big-time sophomore year before a knee injury cost him most of his junior year. He returned in 2010 and earned first-team all-Peninsula district honors for his play. Was a part of Phoebus' 2008, 2009 and 2010 state championship teams. Also had offers from Louisville, Maryland and West Virginia.
Quotes - "His strength is his ability to get to the point of attack. That's what separates him. A lot of kids don't want to take on a fullback. Caleb will throw his stuff up in there. He's good in pass coverage. He reads the pass extremely well." - Phoebus head coach Stan Sexton.
"His biggest thing is the physicality he'll face on the next level. Going against high school kids, he's like a man amongst boys. He'll need to work on being physical going against 300-pound linemen, using his hands and things like that. I think he'll adapt well. It may take a year or so, but I think he'll do it." - Coach Sexton.

Dominique Terrell
Athlete LOI Status: SIGNED |
Notes - A dynamic athlete, Terrell is a playmaker. He played quarterback throughout high school, but look for him to play receiver and to be a return specialist at UVa. Within the offense, he could line up as the quarterback in the Wildcat formation, slot receiver, wide receiver or running back. Terrell totaled 3,489 yards of offense in 2010, including 2,070 yards rushing and 1,419 yards passing, while helping Osbourn to an undefeated regular season and an appearance in the Group AAA, Division 5 semifinals. He attended Osbourn Park for three years before transferring to Osbourn for his senior season. Terrell excelled at quarterback and safety in his time at Osbourn Park, including a 2009 season in which he rushed for 1,317 yards and threw for 827 more. He racked up 17 touchdowns on offense, guiding Osbourn Park to a 10-3 overall record that season.
Quotes - "He is very quick at the point of attack. He throws a lot better than I thought he would. His game speed is so quick. He's so elusive. Another thing I'm impressed with is that he delivers blows when he runs. Our offense calls for our quarterback to make some physical runs." - Osbourn head coach Steve Schultze.

Mason Thomas
Safety LOI Status: SIGNED |
Notes - Primarily a safety though he saw some action at outside linebacker, Thomas had 72 tackles including around 30 solo tackles and two interceptions his senior year. He also played wide receiver on offense. Thomas has been timed in the 40 in 4.42 seconds, though his coach says he runs a consistent 4.5-second 40.
Quotes - "Not only is he a quality player, but he is also a quality individual off the field. He's a great kid. He's on time to everything. He hits the weight room. He puts in the work in the offseason. He played free safety and also saw time at outside 'backer for us. I could see him moving to outside linebacker in college. He is 6-1, 200 pounds. He's physical and smart." - Kempsville head coach Jamaine Paddyfoot.

David Watford
Quarterback LOI Status: SIGNED (2010 class) |
Notes - Enrolled at Virginia in January of 2011. The lone sure-fire quarterback prospect in the class, Watford is already enrolled in school and will be able to compete in spring practice. Watford, who chose Virginia over offers from Virginia Tech and West Virginia, is a dual-threat quarterback. He can make plays as a runner but prefers to pass and possesses solid size and an underrated arm. Watford totaled 3,170 yards of offense in 2010. He passed for 1,478 yards and rushed for another 795, a year after totaling 2,018 yards of offense. Most importantly to Watford, he didn't throw an interception in 157 attempts this season after tossing eight last year.
Quotes - "He's a great player. He's a competitor. To me, that's a great compliment to give a kid. Watford makes up for some quarterback inadequacies with his competitive drive. I think, with great coaching to help him get better with those inadequacies, he may end up being a top notch college quarterback." - Phoebus head coach Stan Sexton.

Jay Whitmire
Offensive Line LOI Status: SIGNED |
Notes - Whitmire started at offensive tackle and defensive end at T.C. Williams. He'll play on the offensive line at UVa and initially projects at tackle, but he is a tremendous athlete and could play anywhere along the line. You don't often hear of an offensive lineman playing lacrosse as well, but that's just what Whitmire did in high school. He also played on the varsity basketball squad. Also had offers from Boston College, Duke, North Carolina and Notre Dame, among others.
Quotes - "He went from being a 6-5, 296-pound lineman as a sophomore to a 6-7, 290-pound junior. He trimmed down and changed his body type, which is one of the things that impressed people. Coaches at camps would see him run around in shorts and a t-shirt and see that he is not sloppy. He is agile." - T.C. Williams head coach Dennis Randolph, discussing Whitmire's development.
